With the death from lung cancer of Camarón de la Isla (born José Monge Cruz) on July 2, 1992, flamenco lost one of its greatest vocalists. The son of a basket-maker, de la Isla revolutionalized the flamenco tradition with his contemporary-minded approach. His debut 1969 album, Con la Colaboracion Especial de Paco de Lucia, recorded with the accompaniment of virtuosic guitarist Paco de Lucia, remains one of flamenco's classic recordings. Although he retired from touring in 1979, de la Isla continued to produce groundbreaking albums. His 1980 album, La Leyenda del Tiempo – which was marked by rock, jazz, and Oriental influences and the use of non-flamenco instruments, including bass, drums, percussion, electric piano, Moog, keyboards, electric guitar, flute, and zither – sold nearly 6,000 copies. His 1989 recording, Soy Gitano, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, became the first album in Spain to be certified gold, with sales of 50,000 copies.

Since 1999, Gogol Bordello has been bringing their unique fusion of punk rock and Eastern European influences to the world, including their legendary theatrical and rambunctious live shows. From its inception, Gogol Bordello has been a band of immigrants, with members hailing from Ukraine, Ecuador, Russia, and Ethiopia. With their eighth studio album and first in five years, Solidaritine, they go back to singer, Eugene Hutz’s more punk rock roots as heard on the new single “Focus Coin” While finishing up the new record, the world turned upside down for Hutz and other members as the war in Ukraine started. With his mind now on helping out his homeland, Hutz has used his influence and art to raise money and awareness. He’s collaborated with everyone from Les Claypool to Billy Strings in recent months, to putting together benefits featuring Patti Smith and more.

Now here's an interesting experiment: take classic melodies by Django Reinhardt, the king of Gypsy jazz ("Nuages," "Minor Swing," "Manoir de Mes Rêves," etc.) and recast them as sambas and bossa novas with an accordion taking the lead. It's certainly not a terrible idea, but a project like this faces a very serious hurdle: the rather defensive liner notes notwithstanding, Reinhardt's music was in fact built on a driving, foursquare rhythmic architecture that could hardly be further removed from the lightly dancing rhythmic patterns of Brazilian jazz.

The project stems from the idea of making a tribute album to gipsy jazz, but it represents also a way to offer our own interpretation of the sounds and atmospheres so typical of this peculiar genre. For this reason we chose to record all the songs as a live session, just one single session without corrections, editing or overdubs.

Genre: Vocal Jazz, Gypsy Jazz | Label: Minnehaha Music

A versatile singer with a warm voice and a quietly swinging style, Connie Evingson explores the usually instrumental Gypsy jazz style during this highly enjoyable project. On various selections she is joined by either Pearl Django, the Clearwater Hot Club, or the Parisota Hot Club, quartets that are sometimes augmented by accordion, vibes, drums, and/or percussion. She performs swing standards, Susannah McCorkle's lyrics to Django Reinhardt's "Nuages," and her own words to "Django's Premonition" (originally known as "Anouman"). The strong repertoire, the instrumental colors, and Evingson's voice are three reasons that Gypsy in My Soul is highly recommended.
