The fluidity of his playing on this album is amazing. Each note falls in place at exactly the right moment. Besides the well-known J.S. Bach, he also introduces us to several other less-known Baroque composers: Gaspar Sanz, Fernando Sor, S.L. Weiss, & Robert de Visee. Too often, Baroque music is presented as just an exercise in counterpoint. In this album, the rhythm is matched to human emotions in such a way that it's not just an academic exercise. The music is both exhilarating and soothing.

The flute and guitar duo is a particularly successful chamber music ensemble, even though the original repertoire for this formation is not limitless. It is, in fact, an almost ideal pairing, granting timbral variety thanks to the utter difference between the two instruments. They are also well matched as concerns dynamics, since none of them is among the loudest instruments of the Western tradition: a flute and guitar duo finds its perfect context in an intimate setting, such as a room where the audience coincides with the players, who perform for their own enjoyment, or a salon, where a restricted, selected audience will be able to appreciate all shades and nuances of their playing.

Villa-Lobos wrote an immense oeuvre. An important place hold his guitar works, the perfect instrument to present his own style, fusing Latin-American folk-inspired elements with more learned European forms, like Etudes and Preludes. English guitar legend Hank Marvin inspired a generation of British post-war guitarists with his smooth, plectrum-based guitar lines. Backing Cliff Richard with his band The Shadows, Hank's guitar playing inspired The Beatles and a generation of British groups starting out in the 1960s. This album sees Hank performing a plethora of songs from the big screen, both recent and vintage. All are flawlessly executed with the smooth melodic perfection that audiences have come to expect from Hank. This album contains a wide range of material–"The Sound of Silence" from The Graduate, "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic, "How Deep Is Your Love?" from Saturday Night Fever and "A Kiss From A Rose" from Batman Forever. Hank purists will enjoy the James Bond Medley containing the James Bond theme, plus music from You Only Live Twice, From Russia With Love and On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Most composers who left major contributions to the guitar repertoire were guitarists themselves. Yet there are some notable exceptions, one of which is precisely Manuel Ponce. And what many of these “notable exceptions” have in common, in turn, is their friendship with a great guitarist, whose talent, skill and expertise frequently inspired them to compose, and attracted them to an instrument which has a very pronounced personality. In fact, the guitar is almost a standalone in the world of classical music. It blends only seldom with other classical instruments in chamber music; it appears even more rarely in a symphonic or chamber orchestra, except as a soloist; and many composers who signed the great guitar masterpieces focused almost exclusively on it, whilst most great composers in the classical tradition wrote very little, if anything, for the guitar.

Fielding an all-contemporary agenda, mostly by composers with links to her native Finland, Mari Mäntylä is a skilled and expressive player who presents a persuasive case for the decacorde. The leaden properties that blunted the many positive attributes of Yepes’ recorded legacy are absent, Mäntylä’s instruments sounding like unusually resonant standard guitars entering territory their six-string forbears are denied. Nowhere is this more striking than in Kymmari by Jukka Tiensuu, composed for Mäntylä’s semi-fretless decacorde. Two strings are altered by a quarter tone and yes, the music is seriously heavyweight. Its unique soundscape is an experience not to be missed. Elsewhere, there’s more accesible fare, the ethereal Pilvi kämmenellä (A Cloud on the Palm of the Hand), a potential ”hit” for the modern decacorde.

Guitarist Andrés Segovia did much to develop the classical guitar as it exists today, and he was almost unique among the great virtuosos of classical music in being self-taught. He commissioned a great deal of music that expanded the guitar repertory, transcribed music for the guitar, and was an influential educator to whom many of today's classical guitarists can trace their musical lineages. Segovia was born on February 21, 1893, in Linares, in southern Spain's Andalucía region. He was raised by an aunt and uncle who recognized his talent and signed him up for violin lessons.

The popularity of the guitar has never waned and the sun-drenched sound of Spanish guitar music is one of the instrument’s most popular incarnations. At the helm of performers of this style of guitar music is Narciso Yepes who recorded vast amounts of guitar music for Deutsche Gramophon. This collection brings together some of the gems from among these recordings and indeed, from the body of work for Spanish guitar.
