An opra-comique by an Italian composer? This was a rarity in its day, but after the barely averted disaster of its opening night, Donizettis La Fille du rgiment became a popular success, not least for the high Cs demanded from Tonio in the famous tenor aria "Ah! mes amis, quel jour de fte! The story revolves around Marie, the canteen girl of the Regiment, whose lover Tonio joins the army to be near her just as she is claimed for marriage into nobility.

Giacomo Gotifredo Ferrari studied in Naples before finding esteem in the Parisian musical world of the late 1780s. Fleeing the Revolution he settled in London. His compositions divide equally between vocal and chamber music, but also include two piano concertos. His Four Duets for Piano and Harp reveal clearly the main features of his art: easy melodic grace founded on his studies with Paisiello, high musical quality, formal balance, and a veneration of Haydn and Mozart. Intended for professionals and amateurs alike, slow movements are expressive and rondos full of vigour. In this recording original instruments are used to do full justice to the period timbre of Ferrari’s dialogues between fortepiano and harp.

A pioneer in the development of opera, Claudio Monteverdi took vocal music beyond Renaissance polyphony into an era in which genuine feelings and emotions could be expressed. Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria is part of a late flowering in Monteverdi’s illustrious career, and is considered the most profoundly tender and moving of his operas. Its hero Ulysses is forced to undergo cruel tests, hardships, treachery and deception before he can be reunited with his beloved queen Penelope and recover his kingdom. This acclaimed production is conducted by renowned early music specialist Ottavio Dantone, who considers Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria to be ‘the most beautiful opera ever written’.

Ever since the publication of his first string quartet collections, Boccherini was immediately recognized, with Haydn, as one of this genre’s founders and foremost exponents. The six string quartets Op. 15 are crucial in the history of development of Boccherini’s quartet production and, more in general, of the classical quartet. This collection, however, has never received the attention it deserves. Like for many other chamber collections by Boccherini, this is mainly due to the lack of a complete score edition that would allow their study and performance. Today, Giuliano Castellani’s critical edition has finally made this recording of the AleaEnsemble possible, and will facilitate the studying of these works within the context of contemporary string quartet production.

Tartini’s violin school in Padua had such a wide international character that it was known as the ‘School of the Nations’. For over 40 years his students returned to their countries of origin, circulating what became a significant cultural legacy. France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands are represented here, as are mid-18th-century tastes for virtuosity and lyrical expressiveness, infused with the fingerprints of Tartini’s stylish and often delightfully ornamental techniques. Volume 1 (CDS723) of this edition was admired for its ‘exquisite violin playing’ (American Record Guide) and was ‘strongly recommended across the board’ by Fanfare.

Pietro Antonio Locatelli was one of the most admired and influential violinist-composers of the 18th century. The summit of his achievement is L’arte del violino, Op. 3, twelve concertos for violin, strings and continuo, each of which contains two sizeable cadenzas that Locatelli called Capricci – bravura pieces independent of their concerto context. Greatly developing chord and arpeggio techniques and full of double-stops and string crossings, they are the most demanding violin works ever composed before Paganini’s own Capricci, which may well have been influenced by Locatelli’s example. Parma born violinist Luca Fanfoni has made several recordings for Dynamic. The recent recording of the 12 Concertos Op. 1 by Mauro D’Alay was praised by MusicWeb International: ‘Luca Fanfoni is a skilled player with a silvery tone’. Luca Fanfoni plays on a violin made by Gioffredo Cappa (Saluzzo, 1690).

The Paduan composer Giovanni Battista Bassani, a contemporary of Corelli, was a fine string player and organist. An important element in his compositional output is the cantate amorose (‘love songs’). His 1684 collection Affetti canori cantate et ariette is the expressive masterpiece of his maturity in which he explores love as a source of suffering. His musical palette is rich and full of variety, with an artful use of chromaticism. The recitatives and arias in this work chart a detailed evolution of moods, exemplifying a true marriage of words and music.

Mozart accepted an anonymous commission to write a Requiem in July 1791. He worked on it during a series of hectic composition, premieres and urgent deadlines that would eventually prove fatal. Mozart’s already failing health, coupled with dark delusions of him being poisoned, convinced the composer that he was writing the Requiem for his own funeral. At his death, very little had been completed in full and much was left in draft form, so it was largely Mozart’s pupil Franz Xaver Süssmayr who completed the work, composing the missing Sanctus and Agnus Dei. This sublime work embraces Bach-like elements coupled with astonishing harmonic modernity in what has become one of Mozart’s best-loved works.

Rigoletto is regarded as the first operatic masterpiece of Verdi’s mature artistic period. Its complex psychology identifies characters with different styles of music, and with an incredible variety of accents for a central figure conceived by the composer as "deformed and laughable, but actually passionate and full of love". From the famous aria "La donna è mobile", to the final horrific tragedy as the curse unfolds, the triumphant success of Rigoletto since its premiere in 1851 has endured to the present day.

The Italian fortepianist Costantino Mastroprimiano has specialized in music of the 19th century, a relatively unusual field for historical keyboardists. He has focused on such composers as Muzio Clementi, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Jan Ladislav Dussek, Johann Baptist Cramer, Friedrich Kalkbrenner, Carl Czerny, Ignaz Moscheles, and Ferdinand Ries. Many of his performances have been buttressed by his own research into historical instruments and playing techniques.

The Avalokite Duo possess a unique sound due to the changing timbres of its countless percussion instruments, combined with the characteristic sounds of the harp. This programme joins their album The Spirit of Sound (CDS7804), and is the result of this duo’s challenge to contemporary composers to make use of their virtuoso skill in making new sonic discoveries. This expansion of the duo’s repertoire ranges from the playful brilliance of Silvia Bianchera’s Apagù to the poignant introspectiveness of Maria Grazia Armaleo’s Preludio and Tanghetto. Middle Eastern experiences can be heard in Annie Fontana’s Appunti di Viaggio, while Angelo Bruzzese’s Capriccio reveals subtle echoes, in this album of distinctive premiere recordings.
