Volume II of Bare Bones is comprised of the “original” duo versions of tunes that became staples of the Garcia/Grisman repertoire, all subsequently arranged for various group sessions. As Dawg states in the notes, “This collection illuminates our process of selecting and arranging the material. “The Sweet Sunny South”, released on Shady Grove as a banjo duet, was originally recorded with guitar and mandolin. Other tunes, like “The Crawdad Song” and “Moonlight Bay” were only tried once and never made it into our set lists.” This project is available in the sonically superior Hi-Definition (24-bit, 96 kHz) format.

The remaining 12 tracks, mostly from Not For Kids Only, were originally recorded as duos, but were embellished with percussion, fiddle, autoharp, vocal harmonies and yes, even insects, added while Jerry was out touring. They are presented here for the first time, in their original unadorned state. This project is available in the sonically superior Hi-Definition (24-bit, 96 kHz) format.

Dawganova is a 1995 all-instrumental album by American musician David Grisman, recorded with his group The David Grisman Quintet. It's a unique collection of Latin rhythms and melodies inspired by the group's newest member, Argentine guitar virtuoso, Enrique Coria. Five Grisman originals are accompanied by classical Latin standards: "El Cumbanchero", "Tico Tico", "Manha de Carnaval" and the Nat "King" Cole classic "Nature Boy". In his Allmusic review, Stephen Thomas Erlewine stated "Grisman's distinctive blend of bluegrass, folk, jazz, and, in this case, latin music is energetic and very impressive."

This Grammy-nominated disc heralds the origins of the highly acclaimed acoustic duo of Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals) and David "Dawg" Grisman (mandolin). They had been chums for years by the time they began their direct partnership in earnest on December 7, 1990, with a nine-song set at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley, CA. Over half of that material would be reworked the following spring – for inclusion on this disc – at Grisman's newly appointed, plush, and well-lit Dawg Studios. Along with David Grisman Quintet members Jim Kerwin (bass) and Joe Craven (percussion/fiddle), Garcia and Grisman revive a few familiar tunes covering every dimension of popular music, ranging from the blues ("The Thrill Is Gone") to folk-rock ("Friend of the Devil"), as well as pop music standards such as Irving Berlin's "Russian Lullaby" – which Garcia had previously covered on his 1974 Garcia (Compliments) album – and Hoagy Carmichael's "Rockin' Chair." They also examined the origins of authentic traditional folk ("Walkin' Boss"/"Two Soldiers").

It's no wonder that mandolinist David Grisman came up with the name "Dawg Music" to describe his style of playing, which draws from bluegrass, jazz, and many other forms of music. This 1978 recording has long been a favorite of Grisman's fans, as all of the compositions and performances have stood the test of time. Grisman's lively "Dawg's Bull" and guitarist Tony Rice's upbeat "Devlin'" set a high standard at the opening of the album, yet the remaining tracks continue to meet the high watermark of the first two songs. In addition to Rice's presence throughout the recording, Grisman utilizes five different bassists (only one song, "Dawgology," features two of them together), violinist Darol Anger, mandolinist Mike Marshall, and on two selections, the jazz violin master Stéphane Grappelli.

Among these performances are the earliest recordings of Dawg’s first original compositions, “Cedar Hill”, “Fanny Hill”, “Opus 57”, “Opus 38” and his only banjo tune — “New York Ramble”, played by Winnie Winston and later renamed “Dawggy Mountain Breakdown”, the “Car Talk” theme recorded with Earl Scruggs. This music is presented chronologically, spanning the decade between 1963-1973 and features Del and Jerry McCoury, Bill Keith and many other incredible musicians who inspired the “early Dawg.”
