Make a recording of two of Mozart’s three flute concertos? For Helena Macherel, it felt like an obvious thing to do. “How could one say no to such an offer?” The patron of the arts, now deceased, who backed her for years, encouraged her in this direction. “I’m not looking for originality at any price, just to let myself be carried away by the beauty of the music, in a quest for truth and authenticity.” To achieve this, she can count on the accompaniment of English musicians well-versed in this kind of challenge: the London Mozart Players, whose experienced members provide not only the ensemble’s conducting but also the chamber partners for the Quartet in D major. “Far from coming up with a fixed vision of the works, I have, on the contrary, encouraged dialogue and exchange with them, and I am delighted with the spirit of freedom that permeates these recordings.”

Now many of the world’s most serious and significant pianists (Schnabel, Serkin, Brendel, Goode, etc.) have devoted a great deal of thoughtful study to the Beethoven sonatas; in general, performance of this music represents a level of erudition and deep contemplation probably unequaled by the works of any other mainstream composer. Serious pianists study every aspect of these works in minute detail; virtually everything is taken into account except those instruments which inspired Beethoven, and which he had in mind when he composed.

He is one of the "superstars" of the piano world. An exceptional teacher – his pupils include stars such as Arcadi Volodos or Claire-Marie Le Guay – Dmitri Bashkirov’s debut with Claves combines a most original programme with orchestra. Face to face; we have: Johann Sebastian Bach’s most famous son; Carl Philip Emanuel; forbearer of the great Romantic composers; and an unusual Ludwig van Beethoven. This particular Concerto op. 61a is indeed very rarely played; copying almost note for note the original score of the Violin Concerto op. 61.

The opening of this album reflects my initiation to Romania and its musical landscape. It was as a teenager that I first experienced George Enescu’s «Romanian Rhapsody No. 1», at the Enescu Festival in Bucharest no less - an unforgettable whirlwind of joyous tunes arranged in perfect chaos, bouncing off a kaleidoscope of folk colours. Discovering the solo piano version by the composer himself years later, I dived straight in and realised I was missing a third hand. Enescu had squeezed almost all the parts of a symphony orchestra into the ‘reduced’ score and the challenge was to arrange it in a way to make it humanly playable on the piano. Teo Gheorghiu

Those playing the flute may know Philippe Gaubert as co-author of the great Méthode complète de flûte, a standard work even a hundred years after its publication. Those who do not play the flute have in all likelihood never heard of him - yet Gaubert was an outstanding figure in French musical life in his day and is still highly interesting as a composer today.

The Violin Sonatas and Partitas manuscript, which has fortunately survived, is dated 1720. The first page of the autograph carries the note “Libro Primo”; Bach’s Cello Suites BWV 1007-1012 may have been regarded as the “Libro Secondo”. A dedicatee is not known. Johann Sebastian Bach composed his Violin Sonatas and Partitas/ when he was employed as Kapellmeister in Köthen (1717-1723) and probably completed the cycle in 1720. There is hardly any other work in the entire violin literature with such significance. Bach set new standards in playing and composition; these works have lost none of their topicality and brilliance to this day.

While twentieth century Swiss composers often synthesize the Latin and Germanic sources of their country’s inspiration in their aesthetics, it is to France that Pierre Wissmer (1915-1992) is resolutely attached, both in his life’s journey as in his artistic ideals. Imbued at first with a post-Ravellian neoclassicism, over the years his style has shifted toward a more distanced relationship with tonality and a more inner language. However, the refinement of the contrapuntal writing and instrumentation will always remain a constant feauture of his art.

There are still many mysteries surrounding Johann Sebastian Bach’s personality. Yet, as new and exciting biographies appear, telling us more and more about the composer, we keep wondering what kind of a man he was in everyday life. Maybe because the very idea of the existence of such a genius is almost disturbing, and never ceases to amaze. However, that Bach was frequently called upon by instrument makers, and not only by organ builders, to listen to, gauge, and probably help tune musical instruments is no secret. He is thus closely related to the oboe family’s history since both the oboe da caccia and the oboe d’amore first appeared in Leipzig while Bach was working there. Moreover, he is the only composer to have offered music (the Passions and numerous cantatas) to the former and its warm, tender tone.

The idea that music begins where language ends goes back to literary Romanticism. In 1835, Joseph von Eichendorff was tracking the “song in all things” with his dowsing rod (“Wünschelrüte” in German, as is entitled one of his most famous poems), searching for the “magic word” that would be capable of transforming the world into song. Only a language that itself becomes music can speak about what it must otherwise keep silent. Thus the credo of romantic poetry. But if language itself becomes music, what is music then to become? In the musical genre of the Lied, in which words and music are twinned, in which meaning and sound support, ensnare and sometimes infiltrate each other, the composers themselves answer this question. Every art song is basically a meditation on the relationship between music and language.

Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir a cappella is one of the repertoire’s most widely performed monuments, and Valentin Villard’s Mass for six voices could well follow in its footsteps. Although 90 years separate these two works, there is an evident filiation between Frank Martin and Valentin Villard. Both composers develop their own harmonic language based on contemporary practices, seek lines of great vocality and explore the orchestral dimension of juxtaposing human voices. Furthermore, both put their writing to the service of an expression of interiority devoid of affectation, with total sincerity and the same ethical and artistic aim.

The two works are classics of concerts for children who are enjoying the same worldwide success: the musical tale "Peter and the Wolf" by Prokofiev and "The Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint:Saëns, which the latter described : probably with a wink : like a "Great Zoological Fantasy". Is the gist of it that way? Not at all. Because the question arises as to why adults appreciate the story of the brave Peter and the bad wolf as much as children. It probably has to do with the great music of Prokofiev. It should also be remembered that Saint:Saëns composed his "Carnival" for a private concert at home, that is to say for the entertainment of adults. And the latter apparently couldn't help laughing, so much so that the composer suddenly got scared and strictly banned the publication of his charming work, fearing that his serious works would no longer be taken seriously. In a way, he was proved right: in terms of popularity with young and old alike, no other work by Saint:Saëns can compete with the "Carnival of the Animals".

Jean Françaix had a passion for wind instruments, in particular for the dextuor, an original formation for which he could combine the expressive richness of the octet, so dear to Mozart, with the shimmer and volubility of the wind quintet. Throughout this recording, it was an immense pleasure to immerse oneself in his music, to let oneself go with the contrasting moods and atmospheres, in turn funny, tender, casual or elegiac. A pleasure shared by the musicians of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, who were keen to showcase their sense of transparency, their musicality and their flawless virtuosity. We are therefore very happy to share these wonderful moments with you, and hope that listening to this disc will bring you happiness and joy.

In the middle of the 16th century, the Geneva Psalter infected the whole of Reformed Europe – Switzerland included – with a true psalm fever. The first complete collection of all 150 psalms, promoted by the Genevan reformer Jean Calvin, was published in 1562. The psalm verses were translated into French and provided with melodies by various Genevan cantors. Thanks to the collection’s immense importance for the Reformation and its unique artistic content, these psalms inspired like none before the most influential composer of the time to write a large number of polyphonic psalm settings. The four-part psalms composed by Claude Goudimel (ca. 1514-1572) were published in 1564, just two years after their initial release. Set in a simple note-against-note setting with the well-known Genevan melodies in the tenor part, these psalms quickly gained incredible popularity.

The Mass in B minor holds a very special place in J.S. Bach’s output: a work of grandeur, an opus ultimum, it was not composed as such but is the result of an assembly of pieces written at different times and for different circumstances. Bach worked on it during the years 1748-1749, until his eyesight, which had gradually deteriorated, was completely lost - a letter of recommendation for his son Johann Christoph Friedrich, dated 17 December 1749, was written by Anna Magdalena, who imitated his signature. It was rumoured in Leipzig that the cantor’s health had deteriorated to such an extent that the city council, on the orders of the all-powerful minister of Saxony, auditioned a conductor from Dresden on 8 June 1749, who had been recommended to him for “the future post of cantor of St. Thomas if the director musices Sebastian Bach should pass away”. By this time Bach was working on his Mass, which was larger than anything that had ever been conceived before[1]. His rather pale successor had to wait another year to replace him, Bach having died on 28 July 1750.

The wealth of music composed for the viola in the 20th century almost lets one forget the dearth of it in the 19th, which brought forth only two solo works of note: Hector Berlioz’s Harold in Italy, a concerto commissioned by Paganini that sidelines the viola so much he refused to play it; and Richard Strauss’s Don Quixote, in which the solo viola is relegated to the part of the Don’s sidekick Sancho Panza. Sidelined and sidekicked – the viola’s fate seemed a fulfilment of the oft-quoted line from Quantz’s sometime flute treatise that “the viola is largely regarded among musicians as being of little significance”.
