Flutist Ashley Solomon and Florilegium continue the Spohr Collection project with Volume 3. Ashley plays nine original exquisite 18th century flutes from Peter Spohr's private collection, which can now be heard around the world for the first time. They are made from various materials including solid ivory, ebony and ivory, and boxwood and ivory. These historical instruments possess a beautiful and unique sound, making them most desirable to play. This new recording explores repertoire from Italy, Germany and England written by composers including Vivaldi, Mozart, Clagget and Locatelli. Each work matches historically and geographically with the flute Ashley plays. Soprano Rowan Pierce joins them for two songs by Chilcot and Lampe.

For this super audio disc from Channel Classics, Dejan Lazic's live performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major is programmed with his solo recordings of the Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor, "Moonlight," and the Sonata No. 31 in A flat major. Ostensibly, this is a sonic showcase for Lazic and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, under Richard Tognetti, and the state-of-the-art technology brings out the best in the musicians, giving the pianist an intimate presence without crowding him or artificially boosting his volume, while at the same time lending the orchestra a spaciousness that really opens it up.

Music of the Trecento At the dawn of the fourteenth century, the Trecento, an Italian tradition of polyphonic music with texts in the vernacular tongue began to develop. The first centres were the towns and courts of Lombardy in the north. Before, French musical and literary influence had been strong both by the imported culture of emigrated troubadours from Southern France and by some of the teachers at the Paduan university who had studied music at the University of Paris.

The Ragazze Quartet joins forces with violist and composer Garth Knox to perform two compositions for string quartet, along with numerous duets and solo pieces. His quartet Four Into Twenty was written for the Ragazze Quartet and is a reflection on the current decade of the ‘Twenties’. Garth Knox is at the forefront of the contemporary music scene. Drawing on his vast experience as the violist of the Arditti Quartet and Ensemble Intercontemporain, as well as his close collaboration with today’s leading composers, he is a unique performer in many different styles. His own compositions broaden the horizon of all string players who play his music. He creates an imaginative world consisting of mostly cheerful sounds with a hint of Scottish and Irish folk music. Ragazze Quartet’s album Four, Four, Three - Music of Terry Riley, released to critical acclaim, received Gramophone Magazine’s Editor’s Choice which stated: “This performance deals up moments of sheer magic”.

The authority on Rameau in the Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians spent a lot of words on these pieces. All YOU have to know is that the usual "continuo" situation of the bass instrument playing the same notes as those found under the harpsichordist's left hand is not present here. This is not a suite with violin on top and bass viol for continuo - but "concerted" harpsichord pieces with the help of a violin and a bass viol. The first and last suites are my favorites, but if you think you like French baroque music, you will thoroughly enjoy the whole disc.

This was the first commercially produced SACD hybrid super audio on the market. In June of 2000, I sat in one room recording in pcm and the research team of Philips were in the room next door taking my analogue signal directly from my mixer. I first released my pcm version in the fall of 2000. The Pyramix at that time was very primitive but thanks to the Phliips team who worked around the clock to produce the software, we were able to get this DSD version out at the beginning of 2001.

With this debut album of three Haydn string quartets, the Amsterdam String Quartet bursts successfully into the recording. The ensemble performs on period instruments, specializing in works composed circa 1762 to 1847. There's nothing dainty or timid about these instruments or its approach to them. In fact, the sound is more energetic and vital than many other ensembles are able to achieve on modern instruments.

Recorded in St John's Church West Norwood, London in March 2022, this recording involves eighteen members of Florilegium, the exact same number Haydn had at his disposal when he composed these symphonies shortly after arriving at Esterhazy in 1761. Haydn’s first symphonies for his new employer, Prince Paul Anton Esterházy, form a group of three entitled "Morning", "Noon" and "Night". Perhaps these were a result of the Prince’s suggestion that Haydn write something programmatic along the lines of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. As symphonies for a small chamber orchestra, all three exploit the solo skills of each of Florilegium’s principals, from flute to double bass, not to mention heroic horns as well as spectacular violin and cello solos, each vividly characterised in an almost operatic way.Florilegium's previous Haydn London Symphonies recording was hailed as "first rate" by BBC Music Magazine. Florilegium is one of Britain's most outstanding period instrument groups specialising in music from the 17th and 18th centuries. Many of their recordings have garnered international awards over the years.

A new recording from violinist Rachel Podger is always worth attention. And before you even get to appreciating the first-class performances - faithful realizations of Bach’s Art of Fugue skillfully arranged for strings - you notice the immediate, vibrant presence of the instruments. The sound is stunning, reminiscent of the early days of digital recording, when listeners used to marvel at how realistic the sound was. Channel Classics has been doing this forever; we just may have forgotten how special it is when it’s done right.

Korean-born Dutch harpist Lavinia Meijer states as her goal "to make the harp better known as a solo instrument, with all its possibilities which are often still unknown to the wider audience." With this release she accomplishes her goal, not so much technically as musically. The harp does not do so much here that the attentive listener to the big early film scores won't have heard before. But Meijer's album falls nicely into the group of releases that are reconstructing the virtuoso solo repertoire of a century ago, rediscovering gems that were swept aside by self-serving modernist imperatives.

After recording Vivaldi's set of Violin Concertos 'La Stravaganza', Opus 4, in 2003, Rachel Podger has been immersed in music by Mozart and Bach on disc. But it has now felt right to come back to the Venetian Maestro, whose sense of drama she adores: “This time I chose his opus 9, the set of 12 Violin concertos entitled 'La Cetra'. There are plenty of jewels in this set, just as in 'La Stravaganza', with even higher technical demands made on the soloist including many, often exotic experimental effects.”

Thomas Oliemans has had French chansons in his head for as long as he can remember: on a scratchy car radio or a cassette player, in the back seat for hours on end on the way to the Vendee or Dordogne, or softly issuing from a gramophone record in his father's study. When he started to learn the piano and got into the habit of singing along, it was obviously French chansons that he picked up by ear and sang entirely phonetically. The French teachers at Oliemans's secondary school enter him in the Concours de la Chanson, which he promptly (and nearly by accident) won. And all of a sudden, the path opened up for him to become a professional singer or pianist. It led into the world of classical singing, opera, lied and oratorio, but the chanson was never far away. On Formidable!, he is joined by Amsterdam Sinfonietta for a recital of old friends.

For both classical musicians and classical musicians, it’s pretty hard to think of an upside to the past period of Covid-themed havoc. However if there is one positive thing that this terrible period will have bequeathed to us for posterity, it’s the number of superb recordings that would never have happened without all those sudden gaps in previously packed performance diaries, and with this harmonious pairing of Haydn and Stravinsky we have yet another.
