BOB MARGOLIN's self-titled album reveals the latest from the 2017 Blues Music Award winner for Best Male Traditional Blues Artist. Six new original songs are his Blues for todays world. He also interprets nine songs he learned back in the day from his legendary friends Muddy Waters, The Band, Johnny Winter, Jimmy Rogers, Snooky Pryor, Pinetop Perkins and James Cotton. His new versions of their songs are from experience with them, more than just covering songs he likes. Feeling their spirits around him, Bob played and sang every note, produced, recorded and mixed this album. Bob explains: My album is self-titled because this album and I are my blessings, my challenges, my history and my future. I want to share them in harmony with you. Were still steady rollin.

Muddy Waters had his second coming 30 years ago, when longtime friend and disciple Johnny Winter and his Blue Sky label returned him–after a series of listless recordings aimed at the rock audience–to the raw, powerful authenticity of his timeless Chess material with a series of powerful albums. Beginning with 1977's acclaimed Hard Again, a subsequent tour produced Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live, recorded onstage in Detroit, New York, and Philadelphia with Muddy's band, Winter, and harmonica player/vocalist James Cotton. Enough live material remained for Legacy to release an expanded version with an entire second disc of unissued concert material. It seems even that wasn't the end. This collection returns again to those remarkable concerts, featuring Muddy on five tracks, among them a rousing "I Can't Be Satisfied," "Trouble No More," "Caldonia," and the closing "Got My Mojo Workin'." Winter and Cotton are no less powerful, Cotton redoing Jackie Brenston's hit "Rocket '88'" and Winter ripping up John Lee Hooker's "I Done Got Over It" and "Mama Talk to Your Daughter."

Bob Margolin gives THANKS to celebrate 50 years since he joined Muddy Waters Band. He plays the same Gibson archtop electric guitar that he played next to Muddy and The Band in The Last Waltz on every song here. He recorded one song by Muddy from 1952 and one that he and Muddy wrote together in 1977. He sings The Shape I’m In by The Band as a Blues with 4-part harmony.”

The term blues guitarist has been so abused and misused, that when the real player comes along, it sounds like a jaded cliché to utilize it. Bob Margolin is a blues guitarist. His tenure in the Muddy Waters band from 1973 to 1980 netted him that distinctive title, and My Road, is his story. On this record, Margolin opted to go with a bare bones ensemble consisting of himself on guitar, Chuck Cotton on drums, and Ted Walters on the harmonica (harp). This has been his working outfit of late, and they are a tight cohesive unit. He wrote six of the twelve tunes, and as the main title reveals, they are pretty much autobiographical. This is primarily a vocal record, where his guitar is utilized in the accompanying role, with trademark bursts of genius.

On Down in the Alley, his first album for Alligator Records, Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin doesn't quite follow though on the success of its predecessor Chicago Blues, yet that's only a relative scale. Margolin is one of a handful of musicians to keep classic Chicago blues alive in the '90s, both through covers and original material. His association with Muddy Waters is, if anything, overhyped by journalists and Alligator alike, but it has to be said that he does Muddy proud with down-and-dirty recordings like this. Margolin's guitar has true muscle, and there's genuine grit to the recording, unlike many contemporary Chicago blues albums. For some tastes, the album may be a little predictable since he never breaks from the tradition, but anyone looking for a straight-ahead slice of electric blues like Chess used to make them should be pleased with Down in the Alley.

Best known for his association with Muddy Waters in the 1970s, Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin is reunited with three other former Waters sidemen on this inspired solo effort: pianist Pinetop Perkins, bassist Calvin "Fuzzy" Jones, and drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith. The title sums it up - the album may have been recorded in various parts of the South, but the style is pure, unadulterated Chicago blues. A number of gutsy originals are included (most notably, "She and the Devil" and "Born in the Wrong Time") along with such time-honored Muddy Waters classics as "Mean Disposition," "She's So Pretty," and "Rollin' and Tumblin." As enjoyable as the band recordings are, the most inspired offering is the unaccompanied solo number "Born in the Wrong Time." On this under-produced, demo-quality recording, Margolin rants and raves about life in the early '90s and says some gut-level things that desperately needed to be said.

This Guitar And Tonight is multi-Blues Music Award winner Bob Margolin's first all-acoustic album. Inspired by his 1935 parlor guitar, Muddy Waters (known for his electric playing) telling Bob 40 years ago he actually preferred acoustic Blues, and Amy Brat's idea that an all-acoustic album would be a fresh adventure, this album made itself. New original songs came easy. His guests on one song each are harp master Bob Corritore and guitar virtuoso Jimmy Vivino. The recording approach is pure, the music sounds right in front of you, no added sugar. No artificial ingredients.

Alligator Records shows a different side of its house-rocking face on this 13-cut collection of acoustic blues. While Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and Bukka White don't appear here, other performers – some of whom one normally associates with overdriven electricity – are. Buddy Guy is present, as is Stevie Ray Vaughan. Koko Taylor's "The Man Next Door" is here and it's one of her greatest performances on record. In addition, Johnny Winter, who was no stranger to a National Steel string bottleneck earlier in his career, returns to give it another go, and the true roots doctor Corey Harris is here with "God Don't Ever Change," and Carey and Lurrie Bell with "Stop Running Around." Guy's "Hi Heel Sneakers" is terrific as is Winter's "Evil on My Mind." But it's those that are normally associated with the acoustic blues like Harris, Saffire – The Uppity Blues Women, Cephas & Wiggins, John Jackson and the legendary Sonny Terry who come off best, bringing the true rhythm and mystery with them into their songs.

AThe title says it all - The Old School adheres to postwar Chicago blues, with a couple of Delta or New Orleans tracks thrown in for good measure. To his credit, Bob Margolin does delve deep into the catalogs of Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, and Percy Mayfield, among others, digging out songs that haven't been covered as frequently as others. His originals - which are in the style of his idols, naturally - can't help but pale next to the classics he's chosen, but they are competent genre exercises. Margolin, on the whole, isn't a particularly remarkable player - he doesn't have a gripping voice or a distinctive slide guitar technique - but he is passionate about this music, and it shows. And that means The Old School is entertaining while it's on, but it doesn't leave much of a lasting impression.

Bob Margolin continues to pay homage to Muddy Waters with each record he cuts and this debut for Blind Pig is no exception. His slide playing is Waters to a tee while his songwriting chops stay firmly in the mold of what Waters himself would come up with, albeit less inspired. Margolin's band is a three-piece knockoff of the old Waters band with Tad Waleters blowing harp in the Little Walter tradition while drummer Wes Johnson supplies a solid Chicago beat, no frills or overplaying out of any of them. If you like your Chicago blues served up '50s style without a lot of technical niceties, this album's right up your alley.

Bob Margolin's goal with this CD was to perform the type of blues-oriented music that he plays at home for his family. Through overdubbing, he is very much a self-sufficient one-man band. The variety of music that he performs spans several idioms, ranging from jump blues and "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal You" to lowdown blues, Bob Dylan's "Tears of Rage," a few songs reminiscent of Muddy Waters (with whom he played regularly for seven years) and an occasional instrumental. Margolin's musicianship is impressive, his vocals are heartfelt, his originals are colorful and his spoken word story on "You Never Know" is realistic while containing a moral. This CD is easily recommended for blues fans.

A longtime Bob Margolin fan, Italian Blues musician Mike Sponza was tearing it up with his own band when he reached out to Bob to join them for a tour of Central Europe. They did ten shows in six European countries, and the combination was so magical, the music so strong that by the end of the tour it was clear they needed to go into the studio to make a record together. Blues Around the World captures that magic with original songs by Bob and by Mike as well as a couple audience favorites, and as a bonus track, Bob's acoustic take on the classic "Love In Vain."

Former Muddy Waters sideman and current Blues Revue magazine columnist Bob Margolin brings his encyclopedic knowledge of blues and chops galore with him on this, his third album for Alligator. Ten of the 14 selections are penned by Margolin, with selected covers of material from Bobby Charles, Grady Jackson, Snooky Pryor and Gladys Knight and the Pips rounding out the mix. This time around Margolin stretches his musical boundaries into new directions, adding to his already wide range of blues subgenres. The title track is a solid homage to Chuck Berry, while Grady Jackson's "Coffee Break" is the kind of atmospheric, sax-driven track that would have fit perfectly on any Aladdin blues-after-hours 10-inch album. "Imagination" gets a true soul workout, as does "The Window," with its funky lead fills…
