For the year 1706, the then Habsburg vice-chapelmaster Marc'Antonio Ziani wrote La Morte vinta sul Calvario, a piece of Good Friday music typical of the Viennese court. Various allegorical figures such as "Faith", "Human Nature" and "The Soul of Adam" enter into a rhetorical dispute with the devil, who rejoices in the death of Christ. The text is of great poetic power, underlined by Ziani's magnificent music, which is very colorful and rich in contrast with obbligato instrumental parts and sometimes refined counterpoint.

The importance of Georg Christoph Wagenseil (1715-1777) in the development of the classical symphony cannot be underestimated, and his concertos were also significant in the formation of the style of early Viennese classicism. As its chief representative, Wagenseil unites Italian, French and German stylistic elements in his works, as was typical of the 'mixed style' of the early 18th century. Moreover, he is considered one of the perfectors of the gallant-sentimental stylistic epoch which became so essential for the formation of classicism in 18th-century music history.

Susanna comes late in the sequence of Handel’s oratorios but in some ways the composer looks back in it to his experience of Italian opera. It largely comprises a sequence of arias (many in the repeated, da capo form of opera seria) as it relates the story from the Biblical Apocrypha of Susanna who is falsely accused of adultery and eventually vindicated through the clever judicial manoeuvrings of the young prophet Daniel.

A famous violinist and an outstanding trumpeter - Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber and Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky. The two already knew each other from their education at the Jesuit College in Troppau, Silesia, and both musicians came to the episcopal court in Kromeríž. While Biber did not return from a business trip without permission after only a short time and made a career as a violinist in Salzburg, Vejvanovsky remained in Kromeríž for the rest of his life and worked there as a Kapellmeister (although as a trumpeter he was never officially given this title). The two seem to have continued to be in contact, for the Kremsier library contains several of Biber's works that were written during his Salzburg period. The fruitful collaboration between the two musicians led to a series of chamber music works in which the trumpet is used on an equal footing with the violin.

Jean-François Madeuf and Pierre-Yves Madeuf are two of the leading exponents of the historically informed performance practice as applied to wind instruments. On natural horn or natural trumpet they can be found in many of Europe’s main early music ensembles and orchestras. On this new Accent CD, they team up with Sigiswald Kuijken’s exquisite La Petite Bande to perform a set of Georg Philipp Telemann concertos as they have never been heard before on record: using natural trumpets and horns, and bringing the pieces back to their original chamber music context.

Amongst several delightful examples of mid- and late-baroque German solo cantatas included here, one stands out as a little masterpiece. It's a lamentation by Johann Christoph Bach, the leading composer of the Bach dynasty before Johann Sebastian. I cannot imagine any listener to be capable of hearing this music without in some way being affected by its poignancy.

The granting of the postal monopoly for the entire empire brought the Thurn and Taxis court immeasurable wealth and Regensburg rose to become one of the most important music centres in the German-speaking world in the second half of the 18th century. Outstanding musicians were engaged for the court orchestra, the most important of whom was the oboist Giovanni Palestrini. His playing must have made a great impression on Prince Alexander and he was held in high esteem.

The Salzburg court conductor Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber is known today as a composer of excellent violin literature. His works are appreciated by violinists for their great artistry and virtuosity. Max Gandolf, the art-minded prince archbishop of Salzburg, also appreciated the violin virtuoso at the time and brought Biber to his court. In public, Biber was mainly active at the cathedral in Salzburg, but Baroque splendour and representation were also in demand at the nearby residence: the same festive instrumental music was heard in the liturgy as well as at courtly ceremonies and banquets. Biber's collection of twelve magnificent sonatas therefore bears the title Sonatæ Tam Aris, quam Aulis Servientes - "to be used both at the altars and in the banquet halls". The instrumentation of strings with two trumpets indicate festive occasions in the presence of the prince - in Salzburg it was customary for two trumpeters to blow fanfare pieces during the princely table in the Residenzhof.

Give each instrument what suits it best, thus is the player content and you well entertained.’ In these pieces, unenticingly called ‘Methodical Sonatas’, Telemann is as good as his word. These are delightful works, full of humour, very skilfully written and never dull. There are two sets of six sonatas each. All are played on a Baroque flute, though certain keys suggest a violin, with fluency and impeccable taste by Barthold Kuijken. His tone is alluring and his ornamentation, mainly based on Telemann’s own suggestions, faultlessly executed. A programme for performers and listeners alike. Outstanding.

Bedrich Smetana's cycle Má vlast is not only the culmination of his symphonic output, it also occupies a unique position in Czech music and conveys a very special message of national character for Czech society. "Sublime", one reviewer called the remarkable live performance of Smetana's Ma vlast by an extended Collegium 1704 during the Prague Spring Festival of 2021. The Czech ensemble played on period instruments and thanks to the Czech conductor Václav Luks, Smetana's masterpiece is a "source of innovation, a living history that took listeners on a journey of pride and inspiration". The album can only be described in one way: a must for every music lover.

Johann Sebastian Bach has always been a fixed point in the musical cosmos of Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande. Over the years, the ensemble has recorded the cantatas for an entire church year, the great sacred works, but also important instrumental works by Bach. Nevertheless, there was still a gap that Kuijken wanted to fill. The present recording is the first part (of a series of three albums) with Bach's six harpsichord concertos, his three harpsichord double concertos and finally the corresponding two violin concertos and the double concerto for two violins.

It is the opera that launched the International Handel Festival in Göttingen in 1920: Rodelinda by George Frideric Handel. With its performance, festival founder Oskar Hagen initiated the Handel renaissance in Göttingen. After the festival had to be cancelled for its 100th anniversary in 2020 due to corona, Rodelinda came to the stage of the Deutsches Theater on 9 September 2021.

Les Traversées Baroques präsentiert hier eine Auswahl in verschiedensten Besetzungen von fünf Sängern a cappella bis zum farbig instrumentierten Satz mit großer Continuobesetzung.
