This is the debut album by Israeli bassist / composer Yoav Kolumbus recorded with his quartet, which also includes saxophonist Evyatar Levy, pianist Gil Assayas and drummer Nadav Matalon. Kolumbus, a classically trained musician, conceived this project as an intellectual exercise, which combines Jazz elements and Classical music forms. Such an approach can be potentially dangerous, as mixing Jazz and Classical music often sound artificial, not to mention ridiculous or even plain kitschy, when done poorly. Luckily Kolumbus managed to avid the traps and produce an album full of intelligent as well as enjoyable music, perfectly executed by him and his cohorts. Of the nine pieces on the album, seven are original compositions by Kolumbus; one is a standard and one a classical composition transposed to the Jazz idiom. The level of performance is excellent and it's evident that the quartet had ample opportunity to warm up to the music before actually recording it. All these four young musicians have already gained plenty of musical experience playing with other ensembles and their aptitude highlights the incredible level of Israeli music scene, which is exploding with talent. In the liner notes Kolumbus writes about the duality of his music, floating (and perhaps struggling) in the gap between the two worlds: Jazz and Classical. He leaves the decision as to the question if his music is Jazz in the hands of the listener. Personally I don't care if it is and if so by what criteria; what matters to me that this is good music, which is both intellectually challenging and aesthetically pleasing, which is already more than one can say about most other music these days. Hopefully we'll hear more of his music soon, and with such excellent starting point we can hope for the best. Warmly recommended! ~rateyourmusic
