The penultimate volume in Hyperion’s four-part survey of the complete solo piano music of Ernő Dohnányi focuses on music from the period when the composer’s pre-eminent position was being assured. The titles of the largest works here, Ruralia hungarica and the Variations on a Hungarian Folksong, mask in their nationalistic ostentation the skill of a true master of piano composition. Martin Roscoe inhabits the world of Dohnányi’s music like no other—appraisals of the earlier volumes attest to this—and this new recording is a joy.

The most substantial item in the third volume of Martin Roscoe's enterprising survey of Ernö Dohnányi's piano music is undoubtedly the suite Ruralia Hungarica. Dating from the 1920's, a period when the composer was adopting a more consciously nationalist idiom, the main thematic material in its seven movements draws upon a collection of Hungarian and Transylvanian folksongs that had recently been transcribed by his compatriots Bartók and Kodály. It's an enormously attractive work, by turns exhilarating, as in the obsessive rhythms of the Presto second movement, and rhapsodic, as in the warmly atmospheric melismatic patterns of the Adagio sixth movement. Roscoe relishes these contrasts in mood with playing that is both exuberant and expressive.

Similar qualities abound in Roscoe's masterly performances of the 1917 Variations on a Hungarian Folksong and the Three Pieces Op 23 composed five years earlier. In this latter work, Dohnányi reverts to a more consciously Germanic style, opening the set with a beautiful Aria that owes much to Schumann and closing it with a barnstorming Capriccio played here with brilliant technical precision.

After the charming neo-Baroque elegance of the Gavotte and Musette, there are more fireworks in a sequence of transcriptions of works by Delibes and Johann Strauss II. Although Dohnányi's arrangement of themes from the operetta Die Fledermaus doesn't quite emulate the outrageous virtuosity of Leopold Godowsky's famous Symphonic Metamorphosis, it is nonetheless full of ingenious touches which are projected here by Roscoe with a winning mixture of charisma and humour.

Martin Roscoe - Erno Dohnanyi: The Complete Solo Piano Music, Vol.3 (2015)

This is the third volume of Martin Roscoe’s complete Dohnányi solo piano music cycle, and with a superb disc of the two piano concertos (hopefully the Variations on a Nursery Theme will follow), to say nothing for an early disc of the two piano quintets, there is a wealth of material to delight and consider.

Dohnányi’s legendary status as a pianist, teacher and composer is confirmed not only in Roscoe’s wide-ranging programme but in performances as commanding and warm-hearted as you could wish. His most substantial offering is the Ruralia hungarica, which later appeared in a variety of forms (I recall a performance for violin and piano by Alfred Campoli). A seven-movement accumulation of Hungarian melodies and ideas, it vividly contrasts gentle musings with vigorous virtuoso ripostes. The fifth movement, of ‘rustic simplicity, delicacy and tenderness’, reminds you of how so many of Dohnányi’s piano works can cut down into teasing and affectionate encores.

The Variations on a Hungarian Theme should never have been allowed to slip out of the repertoire and the three waltz paraphrases are delicious confections, spun off by Roscoe in relaxed rather than pressured style. Here he allows you your own space, never forcing the issue, though he ends Du und Du in a blaze of ballroom light. Superb sound and presentation make this a delectable disc.
