The Mamas and The Papas, American vocal quartet whose intricate harmonies brought them to the forefront of the folk rock movement of the 1960s. The original members were John Phillips (b. August 30, 1935, Parris Island, South Carolina, U.S.—d. March 18, 2001, Los Angeles, California), Michelle Phillips (original name Holly Michelle Gilliam; b. April 6, 1944, Long Beach, California, U.S.), (“Mama”) Cass Elliot (original name Ellen Naomi Cohen; b. September 19, 1943, Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.—d. July 29, 1974, London, England), and Dennis Doherty (b. November 29, 1941, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada—d. January 19, 2007, Mississauga, Ontario).

Veterans of New York City’s Greenwich Village folk scene (Doherty and Elliot performed in the Mugwumps with future members of the Lovin’ Spoonful), the Mamas and the Papas moved to Los Angeles in 1965. At Dunhill Records, with producer Lou Adler, they tallied a series of hits with well-written songs, mostly by John Phillips, that proved perfect vehicles for the group’s cascading harmonies, among them “California Dreamin’” (1965), “Monday, Monday” (1966), and “Creeque Alley” (1967). In sound and look the Mamas and the Papas typified the groovy optimism of the emerging hippie movement (John Phillips wrote “San Francisco [Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair]” for Scott McKenzie). One year after 1967’s Monterey Pop Festival, masterminded largely by John Phillips and Adler, the group disbanded, re-forming briefly in 1971. Elliot, who became a soloist, died prematurely. The Phillipses divorced; Michelle became an actress, John eventually triumphed over drug addiction, and both wrote autobiographies, California Dreamin’ (1986) and Papa John (1986), respectively. The group, which re-formed again with some new members in the 1980s, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

"The Papas & The Mamas is a 1968 album by The Mamas & the Papas. It was their fourth and final album together before the group temporarily broke up before a brief 1971 reunion. Unlike previous studio-recorded albums, The Papas and The Mamas was recorded at the home of John and Michelle Phillips, although with the same production team as on previous albums.

With the exception of the very successful cover version of "Dream a Little Dream of Me" (which is not representative of the rest of the album), the album's subject matter is often downbeat and world-weary, most notably in the lyrical content of "Safe in My Garden", "Mansions", "Too Late" and "Rooms". There are few love songs, and it is also more experimental, the Hendrix-like guitar textures of "Gemini Childe" being one example.

All the material was new upon release with the exception of "Twelve Thirty", which had been released as a single the previous year, in 1967." ~ Wikipedia

People Like Us is the fifth and final studio album released by The Mamas & the Papas in November 1971, three years after the group originally split. This album came to be because the former members of the group were still under contract with Dunhill Records. The group had originally been signed to the label when it was run by their original producer Lou Adler, but by 1971, Dunhill's distributor, ABC Records, had purchased the label and discovered the clause in the group's original contract. According to their contract, the group had to produce one more album, or else be in breach of contract and subject to possible fines. While the album has some memorable songs, it was considered a disappointment by fans and critics, and did not sell well upon its release. It was produced by John Phillips. Michelle Phillips said later in the liner note of a Mamas & Papas CD compilation that the album "sounded like what it was, four people trying to avoid a lawsuit." ~ Wikipedia
