The internal hand-wringing over hip-hop’s generation gap which pits old against young, dyed-in-the-wool formalist traditionalist against melodic experimenter, New York against Atlanta overlooks a very plain fact: For most of the last two decades, hip-hop’s primary topical concerns haven’t changed all that much. How they’re expressed evolves, sometimes mutating at rapid clip, but the stars of today would have lots to talk about with the stars of a decade ago. Or a decade before that.

All of this makes the ascendance of Jidenna, a longtime affiliate of the R&B futurist Janelle Monáe, even more improbable. A onetime conscious rapper turned dandy who was raised in Wisconsin and Nigeria, he broke through with “Classic Man” (2015), an irresistible thumper about dignity, sartorial rigor and, more quietly, the ways the dapper overlaps with the dastardly. It also oh-so-mildly nods to Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” a spiritual progressive copying a white Australian carpetbagger copying the sound of minimalist Los Angeles rap copying the thickness of Bay Area street rap.

This was a very well trod path, and yet somehow uncharted. Since then, Jidenna has released a smattering of singles, all strong and none quite the same tough-talking hip-hop (“Long Love the Chief”), Afrobeats-influenced dance-pop (“Little Bit More”) and more. They’re aggregated, along with a heap of new material, on his debut album, “The Chief,” a sometimes fascinating collection of alternate-universe hip-hop and pop from a sui generis character.
