The superbly consistent quality of the Third Book of songs by John Dowland suggests that the earlier issues, First Book and Second Book also recorded by Anthony Rooley and the Consort of Musicke, were no mere flashes in the pan, but set the tone for the whole series.
Indeed, the Third Book shows that the musicians have grown with the project. Martyn Hill covers most of the serious songs in this book. He has astonishing control on the enormous "Love stood amazed" and on the extraordinary "Time stands still". The vocal quartet sings with crystal-clear balance and sensitivity in "When Phoebus first", "Say, love, if ever thou didst find". David Thomas performs "It was a time" and "What poor astronomers" with amazing precision. However there is a restrained tone in the performance unlike other recordings.
There is long-range control of Rooley's playing, and this contributes strongly to the sense of unity among the different singers and different songs. But the Lute is quiet in the recording.
Emma Kirkby is on top form, and the sound is crisp and clear The whole disc is excellent.
