Not since Yo-yo made his recording back in 1990 has there been such power and precision displayed in a recording of the Barber Cello Concerto, and she practically glides through phrases where other famous soloists (I'm looking at you, Kirschbaum) struggle to stay afloat. My favorite and, dare I say, the definitive performance of my favorite cello concerto.
She also brings a refreshing normality to the Elgar Concerto. Nearly every recording of this piece glistens with shmaltz and rubati, but Gastinel takes very much after her teacher Tortelier in this performance. It admittedly seems a bit hectic at times – especially in the 3rd and 4th movements – but if you're looking for some no-nonsense Elgar, this is the recording for you.
