The biggest surprise on this wonderfully exuberant and exhilarating disc comes with the very first notes: the piano tone is rich and full, worlds away from the slightly distant, musical-box tone that is often thought appropriate for recordings of Domenico Scarlatti's sonatas on a modern concert grand. But as the soundworld suggests, Tharaud is totally unapologetic about playing these pieces – all originally composed for harpsichord even though the earliest fortepianos were in circulation in Scarlatti's time – on a piano. In the sleevenotes, Tharaud says that of the four baroque keyboard composers that he has recorded so far – Bach, Couperin, Rameau and now Scarlatti – it's the last whose music is most suited to this treatment. His selection of sonatas is chosen for maximum variety, with a group in which the Spanish inflections of flamenco and folk music can be heard, others in which he gets a chance to show some dazzling technique, alongside those in which the playfulness is replaced by profound introspection. There's never a dull moment, and Tharaud's range of touch and colour, and his sheer enthusiasm, shine through every jewel-like piece.

Review by Andrew Clements, The Guardian

Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) is one of the most adaptable of composers, his keyboard sonatas responding both to “historically aware” interpretation on instruments of the Baroque period and to performance on a 21st-century piano.

Even in the 19th century, Chopin and Brahms avidly admired Scarlatti, and fairly recent discs by Mikhail Pletnev (Virgin Classics) and Yevgeny Sudbin (BIS) have highlighted how a sensitive artist can use a modern grand to elucidate Scarlatti’s colour, character and expressive scope.

The French pianist Alexandre Tharaud now brings his own insight to bear on 18 Scarlatti sonatas. With something in the region of 600 to choose from, there is a great deal of room for manoeuvre in devising varied programmes: Tharaud’s is completely different from Sudbin’s and overlaps with Pletnev’s in only two sonatas, the D minor K141 and the E major K380, the latter being one of the pieces that introduced Tharaud to Scarlatti when he was studying at the Paris Conservatoire as a teenager.

The fact that Scarlatti used the same two-part structural template for all his sonatas is camouflaged by his vast imaginative range, a fertile mind that Tharaud taps and illuminates absorbingly in this recital. Some of the sonatas are couched in the bravura manner that makes Scarlatti such a technical force to be reckoned with, Tharaud delivering the fleet C major K72, D major K29 and C major K514 with all the dazzle that the wide leaps, repeated notes and cross-hands writing demand.

There are other sonatas that, in their flamenco exuberance and hints of guitar-strumming, attest to Scarlatti’s long years in Spain, and yet others that inhabit gentler worlds of graceful dance or singing melody. The diversity is captivating and Tharaud is a consummate master of it.
