During times of extreme political and social change, Stevie Wonder's voice and songwriting served as cultural and spiritual guideposts to many a listener, often lending insight and a barometer with which to measure the ways of the world. But that was largely during the golden phase of his career, generally regarded as being the late '60s through 1980's Hotter Than July. His work in the mid-'80s through the '90s was marginal in comparison, only hinting at glimpses of former brilliance, sugar-coated by over-polished production and radio-friendly content. So with a decade passing since his last full-length, 1995's Conversation Piece, people waited with bated breath for a sign of his return…and wondered which Wonder would show up: would it be the socially conscious genius who wrote anthems for a generation, or the R&B crooner who dominated quiet storm radio? Thankfully, it's a blend of both.

If you didn't know that Electric was completed in 2000, you could easily assume that it was recorded back in the 1970s. That's because this solo offering isn't much different from the recordings that Paul Rodgers made with Bad Company and Free during his youth. Instead of trying to be relevant to the alternative rock scene of 2000 like some veteran rockers have done, Rodgers excels by sticking with what he does best: 1970s-type arena rock that is slick and bluesy at the same time. "Freedom," "Deep Blue," "Jasmine Flower," and other selections don't break any new ground for the British singer (who wrote and produced all of the material himself), and Electric will hardly be considered cutting-edge by 2000 standards.

Straight Shooter is the second studio album by British supergroup Bad Company. The album was released in April 1975. The album reached number 3 in the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200. It was certified gold a month after its release. Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke revealed on In the Studio (which devoted an episode to Straight Shooter) that the track "Shooting Star" (which told the story of a rock star who died early) was lyrically inspired by the drug and alcohol-related deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison.

Amazon Review by Gavin B.
The "Best of Ska" issued by the British import label Disky Records is a unique collection of Jamaican influenced ska. There are few collections of ska that include a good cross section of the earliest ska classics from Jamaica in the Sixties in the same collection as music of the Great Ska Revival in the United Kingdom in the Eighties.
The "Best of Ska" may disappoint the ska purists but the consistent quality of this massive 3 disc cd is the best argument for musical pluralism I've ever heard. Hard core music collectors often develop tunnel vision and dismiss innovation, simply on the basis of its "inauthenic" origins and end up missing a lot of great music in the process. As such, the music of younger generation of UK ska players should be judged on it's own merits, and not a set of "a priori" standards established by musical snobs.

Ummagumma is the fourth studio album by English rock band Pink Floyd. It is a double album and was released on 7 November 1969 by Harvest Records. The first disc consists of live recordings from concerts at Mothers Club in Birmingham and the College of Commerce in Manchester that contained part of their normal set list of the time, while the second contains solo compositions by each member of the band recorded at Abbey Road Studios. The artwork was designed by regular Floyd collaborators Hipgnosis and features a number of pictures of the band combined to give a Droste effect. It was the last album cover to feature the band.

Nicknamed the "Female Preacher," Lyn Collins was discovered in the early '70s along with her relatives Bootsy and Catfish Collins by James Brown, who was making the transition to the hardest Funk phase of his career. Collins' work has appeared on Polydor compilations like James Brown's Funky People and James Brown's Original Funky Divas, as well as the bootleg singles comp Female Preacher; she continued to tour and perform, most notably at the European Jazz/Funk Festival (in both 1998 and 1999) and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Shortly after returning from a European tour in February of 2005, Lyn Collins passed away on March 13 at the age of 56. 20 tracks. Spectrum. 2005.

This 1970 club date in a Munich club by Art Farmer wasn't released until 1998, but it is by no means a collection of outtakes; it was in the possession of the club owner as his own private treasure. The flügelhornist (though he is inexplicably credited playing trumpet on the CD) is joined by his pianist of choice while in Europe, Fritz Pauer, along with bassist Peter Marshall and drummer Erich Bachtragl. Both Farmer and Pauer deliver consistently outstanding solos throughout the set, and what's unusual is that all of the tracks are originals by the leader. "Concord" and "Concourse" are both up-tempo cookers, while Marshall's fine solo introduces the bluesy "Overnight." While the piano is slightly buried in the mix, this otherwise excellent recording is very much a worthwhile investment for fans of hard bop.

Bishop is a slide guitar great with 45-years of blues under his belt which includes his electrifying debut with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in 1965. Featuring B.B. King, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, George Thorogood, James Cotton, Kim Wilson, Tommy Castro, John Nemeth, Ronnie Baker Brooks, and Angela Strehli.

The Most Relaxing Album in the World…Ever features a mix of smooth pop, rock, and new age songs like Enigma's "Sadness," Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells," the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows," Otis Redding's "Dock of the Bay," and Deep Forest's "Sweet Lullaby." Aside from similarly mellow tempos, not much links Enya's "Orinoco Flow," Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game," and Sade's "Smooth Operator," but overall, The Most Relaxing Album in the World…Ever is an enjoyable, accessible collection, even if it doesn't live up to its title.

Digitally re-mastered reissue of Sergio's debut album with his trio. Initially, Sergio moved from Brazil to New York to work as pianist with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Art Farmer (amongst others). He recorded this album plus a second album entitled Girl from Ipanema before forming the band that would eventually become Brasil '66. Bossa Nova York is closer to authentic Brazilian music than his later, more commercial recordings and these early sides are adored by Jazz purists. Originally recorded in New York and released in 1964.
