Big Band Bossa Nova is a 1962 album by saxophonist Stan Getz with the Gary McFarland Orchestra. The album was arranged and conducted by Gary McFarland and produced by Creed Taylor for Verve Records. Bossa nova means ‘new wave' or ‘new trend', and this album rode that wave, making No. 13 on the Billboard album chart in 1963 in the wake of the success of Jazz Samba (1962) and prior to the release of Getz/Gilberto (1964). Sandwiched as it is between the two classic albums of the era, it sometimes gets unfairly overlooked…

Recorded for the Impulse! label in 1963 and very much underrated since, "Salt and Pepper" is an excellent pairing of tenors Sonny Stitt and Paul Gonsalves. Most of the album has the spontaneous feel of a live jam session where two great musicians pass the night trading licks.

Cootie Williams, one of the finest trumpeters of the 1930s, expanded upon the role originally formed by Bubber Miley with Duke Ellington's Orchestra. Renowned for his work with the plunger mute, Cootie was also a fine soloist when playing open. This sessions from 1958 shows that Williams' broad style was still mightily intact some 30 years after joining the Ellington fold.

Though he was never the most distinctive vocalist, Johnny Hartman rose above others to become the most commanding, smooth balladeer of the 1950s and '60s, a black crooner closely following Billy Eckstine and building on the form with his notable jazz collaborations. This album featuring performances recorded in 1964 for the Impulse! label.

In 1979 Art Pepper was recorded at two sessions that yielded two fine albums, So In Love and the New York Album. There was more first-rate material recorded in those two sessions than would fit on two LPs so difficult choices had to be made as to what material not to include on the albums released at the time. Those choices were not necessarily made on the basis of the quality of the performances but with respect to such considerations as length and congruence of repertoire within an album.

The Spirit of 176 is a 1988 album by the jazz pianists George Shearing and Hank Jones. Allmusic's review wrote of Shearing and Jones that "Their unique matchup as a two-piano duo on this Concord release works surprisingly well for the two pianists manage to stay out of each other's way and the ensembles are not overcrowded. …the results are swinging and tasteful. This somewhat obscure Concord CD is worth investigating".
