Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre was a virtuoso harpsichordist, as well as the author of many pioneering works. She left an abundant output of cantatas, both secular and sacred. Here the soprano Maïlys de Villoutreys, Héloise Gaillard and her Ensemble Amarillis pay tribute to her with the cantatas Judith and Sémélé, inspired by two women, who embody virtue and courage on the one hand, temerity and pride on the other. Whether intimate or more operatic, both works highlight the composer’s innate sense of drama.

For this new recording, taking the form of an initiatory journey, Marianne Piketty and Le Concert Idéal explore the subject of night-time and the fascination it holds for composers. From the capricious and exuberant nights of Antonio Vivaldi to the melancholy of Lili Boulanger’s D’un soir triste and the greater optimism of its partner piece, D’un matin de printemps, via the poetic and sensuous dreams of Eugène Ysaÿe, the musicians of Le Concert Idéal travel to different places and different periods in time, looking at the night sky, and reaching the present day with the concerto Bajo la estrella, commissioned from the composer Alex Nante and recorded here for the first time.

"That now on the organ or instrument of all instruments, in the churches, so respectable and excellent much and great is held: that makes the unspeakable and exceedingly great art, which therein is and is conceived." (Michael Praetorius 1619)
Many North German composers brought the great richness of this instrument to its highest splendor: besides Michael, his namesake Hieronymus Praetorius, Buxtehude, Tunder, Weckmann, Leyding, Druckenmüller, Hanff and Bruhns founded the North German Organ School between the 16th and 18th centuries. Dirk Trüten plays the organ of the Catholic Church in Dübendorf, Switzerland, built by Bernhardt Edskes in 2014.

For this recording, Adélaïde Ferrière sheds light on the marimba. As a remarkable percussionist, and nominated for a Victoire de la Musique award in 2017, she brings out the surprising features of her instrument for an album and a programme that perfectly suits her: radiant, powerful and striking. Whether she chooses Xenakis or Hurel, Adélaïde Ferrière keeps displaying grace and a spectacular virtuosity: her playful performance is a delight, as much as it is an ode to rhythm and verve. Contemporary music is more alive than ever.
