Based in Kampala, Arsenal Mikebe are a groundbreaking Ugandan ensemble who playfully dance around the fringes of of acoustic and electronic music, infusing tempo-fluxed polyrhythms with dizzying chants and ghostly synthetic drones. The band is made up of percussionists Ssentongo Moses, Dratele Epiphany, Luyambi Vincent de Paul and was co-founded by Portugese sonic alchemist Jonathan Uliel Saldanha, together they straddle a unique custom instrument dreamt up by Ugandan master sculptor Henry Segamwenge, better known simply as Sega.

A founder member of Uganda's rebellious ANTI-MASS collective (alongside Authentically Plastic and Turkana), Nsasi has built up a reputation with subversive DJ sets, smashing together slowed-down dance anthems and glossy R&B with propulsive fringe club experiments. His debut album is a dynamic, industrial rasp that draws on his expertise behind the decks, expertly meshing rhythms from across the musical spectrum into a coarse, dancefloor-ready frame. With the safety of queer people in Uganda compromised by a conservative, intolerant administration, 'Coinage' acts as a rallying cry for like-minded outsiders that mischievously perverts East African traditional sounds, considering their revolutionary potential within a new context.

Durban-based gqom futurists Phelimuncasi continue unpicking their musical seams on this latest borderless statement, teaming up with Metal Preyers to venture further into the desolate unknown. The group met up in Nyege Nyege's Kampala studio last year, where they spent three days engineering a sequence of tracks that turned the acts' respective sounds inside out, stretching urgent vocals over mutating backdrops of time-stretched electronic drums, saturated noise and unstable synths.

On his acclaimed solo debut "Uingizaji Hewa" we were introduced to his idiosyncratic "hip-hop singeli" sound, a slower cousin to the Dar es Salaam-rooted hard 'n fast club template that takes as much special sauce from Busta Rhymes and Eminem as it does the 200bpm clatter of genre veterans Jay Mitta and Sisso.

In Nakibembe, a small village in Uganda's Busoga kingdom (one of the country's four remaining constitutional monarchies), locals have long reserved a communal area for musical performances and social events. In the middle of this space lies a deep pit that serves a single purpose: to amplify the embaire, an immense xylophone made up of between 15 and 25 wooden keys that stretches across the trench.

There are stories here. There are memories and dreams, keepsakes and wishes. There are truths told straight and fashioned into shapes. There is struggle and resilience. There is humanity. Throughout, there is music.

Medusae is a symbol for a multitude of concepts which we bring together with our present album of electroacoustic improvisation. Merging modern creative music and computer music, we explore the intersection of human and machine musical creativity. Like medusae, this interaction can be both frightening and fascinating.
