This equation has always been in Paul Weller's sights, from his punk debut at the head of Jam to his soul turn with Style Council through his solo career at 360° started in 1992. With on Sunset, The Modfather slalome more than ever, to the point of being often close to the stylistic fireworks. Pop, psyche, rock, folk, easy listening and soul, this is the latter genre that predominates in this 15th opus. In a good mod worthy of the name, Weller knows and obviously worships all the compartments, from the Northern soul to Motown through the blue-eyed-soul. But here the DNA of the songs of on Sunset remains above all pop. A licked pop, with drawers, very arranged and very referenced as on Equanimity where he signs an unlikely alloy between the Kinks and Bowie. Acoustic or electronic Instruments, vintage synths, large orchestra, funky brass, The Modfather is hungry and unwraps his XXL hardware that allows him to go from intimate to grandiloquent (Rockets), from the mainstream to the experimental, in a snap of his fingers. Even in his guests, Weller ratisse large: Steve Cradock, the ex-Ocean Colour Scene with whom he has worked for years now, his old friend Mick Talbot of The Style Council brings back his Hammond organ on three tracks, Julie Gros of the group Le Superhomard (who sings in French on More), Josh McClorey guitarist of The Strypes, folk singers of the Staves or even R&B singer Col3trane. Those who know the ancient brain of The Jam on the tips of the nails will find themselves there without worry, as their idol is having fun here with all his usual mischievous.
