Darling West decamped for a tiny island on Norway’s west coast to begin writing what was to become Cosmos, their fifth studio album. For the first time, the band’s core – married couple Mari and Tor Egil Kreken – have included band members Thomas Gallatin and Christer Slaaen in the songwriting and production process. As a larger united, Darling West has really evolved. Cosmos is indeed the sound of expansion.

When she got a hold of quality songs, no one could out sing her. This set has several examples of Vaughan's immense talent, including the old standard "I'll Be Seeing You," which Vaughan transforms into a vocal masterpiece. Notice how her singing coasts elegantly over the varied rhythms of the bop classic "Green Dolphin Street" almost as if she were a member of the horn section.

Though there are many beautiful singing voices in jazz today, Viktoria Tolstoy is one of a kind. A great melodramatist of jazz who is also bipolar, she makes happiness sound fragile and threatened, and bitterness sweet and enchanting. She has framed and perfected this art on a conceptual level since becoming an ACT artist in 2003, whether concentrating on material from Esbjörn Svensson - whose e.s.t. began to some extent as her accompanying trio - or, most recently, on Herbie Hancock, classical originals, Swedish standards or repertoire from Russia, the home of her ancestors.

"Classic! (Live At Newport)" is Grammy-winning saxophonist Joe Lovano's 25th release for Blue Note, recorded in August 2005 at the Newport Jazz Festival. Lovano has dedicated the album to the memory of his legendary pianist, the late Hank Jones, who was 87 years old when this performance was captured. In addition to Jones, Lovano is backed here by bassist George Mraz and drummer Lewis Nash.

"Winelight" is a smooth, well produced groove, that flows together nicely. It is an album good for waking up to on a Sunday morning, or playing while enjoying a bottle of wine late Saturday night. The songs feature enough tempo changes to keep things interesting, and Grover extends several of his solos, often playing beyond the context of the song. Ralph MacDonald’s percussion is particularly effective throughout the album.
