Optimization Techniques: An Introduction

Optimization Techniques: An Introduction by L. R. Foulds
English | PDF | 1981 | 512 Pages | ISBN : 1461394600 | 31.3 MB

Optimization is the process by which the optimal solution to a problem, or optimum, is produced. The word optimum has come from the Latin word optimus, meaning best. And since the beginning of his existence Man has strived for that which is best. There has been a host of contributions, from Archimedes to the present day, scattered across many disciplines. Many of the earlier ideas, although interesting from a theoretical point of view, were originally of little practical use, as they involved a daunting amount of com putational effort. Now modern computers perform calculations, whose time was once estimated in man-years, in the figurative blink of an eye. Thus it has been worthwhile to resurrect many of these earlier methods.

Elements of Optimization: With Applications in Economics and Business

Elements of Optimization: With Applications in Economics and Business by Delia Koo
English | PDF | 1977 | 229 Pages | ISBN : 0387902635 | 15.7 MB

This book attempts to present the concepts which underlie the various optimization procedures which are commonly used. It is written primarily for those scientists such as economists, operations researchers, and en gineers whose main tools of analysis involve optimization techniques and who possess a (not very sharp) knowledge of one or one-and-a-half year's calculus through partial differentiation and Taylor's theorem and some acquaintance with elementary vector and matrix terminology. Such a scientist is frequently confronted with expressions such as Lagrange multi pliers, first-and second-order conditions, linear programming and activity analysis, duality, the Kuhn-Tucker conditions, and, more recently, dy namic programming and optimal control. He or she uses or needs to use these optimization techniques, and would like to feel more comfortable with them through better understanding of their underlying mathematical concepts, but has no immediate use for a formal theorem-proof treatment which quickly abstracts to a general case of n variables and uses a style and terminology that are discouraging to people who are not mathematics majors.

Mathematical Control Theory

Mathematical Control Theory by J. Baillieul, J. C. Willems
English | PDF | 1999 | 389 Pages | ISBN : 0387983171 | 64.5 MB

This self-contained volume surveys three decades of mathematical control theory and at the same time describes how the work of Roger Brockett shaped and influenced its development. Nine survey articles written by leading experts in the field, who have also been closely associated with Roger Brockett at various stages in his career, treat the subject cohesively and in depth. This volume will provide an important reference for graduate students and researchers,as well as for mathematicians, engineers and scientists whose work involves concepts and the language of control and systems theory.

Nonlinear Programming and Variational Inequality Problems: A Unified Approach

Nonlinear Programming and Variational Inequality Problems: A Unified Approach by Michael Patriksson
English | PDF | 1999 | 343 Pages | ISBN : 0792354559 | 35 MB

Since I started working in the area of nonlinear programming and, later on, variational inequality problems, I have frequently been surprised to find that many algorithms, however scattered in numerous journals, monographs and books, and described rather differently, are closely related to each other. This book is meant to help the reader understand and relate algorithms to each other in some intuitive fashion, and represents, in this respect, a consolidation of the field. The framework of algorithms presented in this book is called Cost Approxi mation.

Real Analysis and Applications: Theory in Practice

Real Analysis and Applications: Theory in Practice by Kenneth R. Davidson
English | PDF | 2010 | 522 Pages | ISBN : 0387980970 | 5 MB

This new approach to real analysis stresses the use of the subject in applications, showing how the principles and theory of real analysis can be applied in various settings. Applications cover approximation by polynomials, discrete dynamical systems, differential equations, Fourier series and physics, Fourier series and approximation, wavelets, and convexity and optimization. Each chapter has many useful exercises.

Perturbation Analysis of Optimization Problems

Perturbation Analysis of Optimization Problems by J. Frédéric Bonnans
English | PDF | 2000 | 618 Pages | ISBN : 0387987053 | 52.1 MB

The main subject of this book is perturbation analysis of continuous optimization problems. In the last two decades considerable progress has been made in that area, and it seems that it is time now to present a synthetic view of many important results that apply to various classes of problems. The model problem that is considered throughout the book is of the form (P) Min/(x) subjectto G(x) E K. xeX Here X and Y are Banach spaces, K is a closed convex subset of Y, and / : X -+ IR and G : X -+ Y are called the objective function and the constraint mapping, respectively.

Linear and Nonlinear Programming, Fifth Edition by David G. Luenberger
English | PDF,EPUB | 2021 | 609 Pages | ISBN : 3030854493 | 28.7 MB

The 5th edition of this classic textbook covers the central concepts of practical optimization techniques, with an emphasis on methods that are both state-of-the-art and popular. One major insight is the connection between the purely analytical character of an optimization problem and the behavior of algorithms used to solve that problem. End-of-chapter exercises are provided for all chapters.

Practical Optimization: Algorithms and Engineering Applications

Practical Optimization: Algorithms and Engineering Applications by Andreas Antoniou
English | PDF | 2007 | 675 Pages | ISBN : 0387711066 | 16.6 MB

Practical Optimization: Algorithms and Engineering Applications provides a hands-on treatment of the subject of optimization. A comprehensive set of problems and exercises makes the book suitable for use in one or two semesters of a first-year graduate course or an advanced undergraduate course. Each half of the book contains a full semester’s worth of complementary yet stand-alone material. The practical orientation of the topics chosen and a wealth of useful examples also make the book suitable as a reference work for practitioners in the field.

Bayesian Heuristic Approach to Discrete and Global Optimization: Algorithms, Visualization, Software, and Applications

Bayesian Heuristic Approach to Discrete and Global Optimization: Algorithms, Visualization, Software, and Applications by Jonas Mockus
English | PDF | 1997 | 394 Pages | ISBN : 0792343271 | 23.92 MB

Bayesian decision theory is known to provide an effective framework for the practical solution of discrete and nonconvex optimization problems. This book is the first to demonstrate that this framework is also well suited for the exploitation of heuristic methods in the solution of such problems, especially those of large scale for which exact optimization approaches can be prohibitively costly. The book covers all aspects ranging from the formal presentation of the Bayesian Approach, to its extension to the Bayesian Heuristic Strategy, and its utilization within the informal, interactive Dynamic Visualization strategy.
