The Content Governance Dilemma

The Content Governance Dilemma: Digital Constitutionalism, Social Media and the Search for a Global Standard by Edoardo Celeste , Nicola Palladino , Dennis Redeker , Kinfe Yilma
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 153 Pages | ISBN : 3031329236 | 4 MB

This book is one of the first academic works to comprehensively analyse the dilemma concerning global content governance on social media. To date, no single human rights standard exists across all social media platforms, allowing private companies to set their own rules, values and parameters. On the one hand, this normative autonomy raises serious concerns, primarily around whether companies should be permitted to establish the rules governing free speech online. On the other hand, if social media platforms simply adopted international law standards, they would be compelled to operate a choice on which model to follow, and put in place mechanisms to uphold these general standards. This book examines this topic from a multidisciplinary perspective, drawing from the expertise of the authors in law, political science and communication studies.

Electoral Politics in Zimbabwe, Volume I: The 2023 Election and Beyond

Electoral Politics in Zimbabwe, Volume I: The 2023 Election and Beyond by Esther Mavengano, Sophia Chirongoma
English | PDF,EPUB (True)| 2023 | 329 Pages | ISBN : 3031271394 | 22.4 MB

Volume one of Electoral Politics in Zimbabwe pays special attention to the overarching view that the 2023 harmonized elections define the fate of the major presidential contenders and their parties as well as (re) shaping the political and economic trajectories of the nation. Cognizant of the complex nature of the Zimbabwean political realm and nuanced dynamics at play, the chapters in this volume cover three interrelated themes: the electoral environment in Zimbabwean politics; language, politics, and elections in Zimbabwe; and lastly, electoral institutions and human rights in Zimbabwean politics. The chapters foreground the ongoing tensions and politicking between the two main rivals, the ruling party, ZANU PF and the main opposition party, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC). The contributors also highlight the impact of internal tensions and factionalism within the contending parties, the apparent voter apathy, disconcerting voices due to claims about lack of transparency and a toxic political space as factors impacting on the outcome of the 2023 presidential elections. The volume will appeal to academics and practitioners in politics, human rights, religion, gender, media, languages, linguistics, and development studies.

Unpacking the Death Penalty in ASEAN

Unpacking the Death Penalty in ASEAN by Sriprapha Petcharamesree, Mark P. Capaldi, Alan Collins
English | PDF,EPUB | 2023 | 189 Pages | ISBN : 9811988390 | 3.7 MB

This book contributes conceptually, theoretically and morally to a deeper understanding of the distinctive Asian perceptions of punishment, justice and human rights. Researched and prepared by scholars who have not only been conducting studies on the death penalty in the region but have also been advocating for legal reforms, this edited book touches upon the different justifications for the use of capital punishment in the ASEAN region, exposing the secrecy, sensitivities and dilemmas that mask violations of international human rights laws. The chapters bring in numerous new perspectives which have been overlooked in the traditional discourse surrounding the use of the death penalty, such as that around crimes that do not meet the threshold of “most serious”; the dignity of death row inmates and their families; contradictions within religion and capital punishment; and the way in which growing authoritarianism and the media are adversely influencing the public’s perception and support for capital punishment in the region.

Virtues from Hell: Survivors of Conflicts and the Reconstruction-Reconciliation Processes by Fidèle Ingiyimbere
English | EPUB | 2022 | 166 Pages | ISBN : 3030891720 | 0.3 MB

This book offers a critical examination of certain ideas and values—such as remembering, forgiveness, story-telling through Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, etc.—that undergird the transitional practices and mechanisms of societies emerging from conflicts. It does so by making the survivors’ experience the supreme and ultimate judge of the legitimacy of such practices. While many scholars have dealt with these topics, this book provides a unique perspective on them by using personal stories, narratives and memoirs of the survivors as a checking point of the theoretical elaboration of these ideas and values.

Trends and Challenges in International Law: Selected Issues in Human Rights, Cultural Heritage, Environment and Sea by Maurizio Arcari
English | PDF,EPUB | 2022 | 327 Pages | ISBN : 3030943860 | 4.8 MB

Over the last century, international law has sought to keep pace with sweeping changes that have revolutionised the international community. It has done so in various ways: by developing new fields, adopting new legal instruments, and including new actors and entities in the international fora. Human rights law and environmental law have emerged to address essential issues raised by civil society. Treaties, judgments and soft law instruments have attempted to fill the gaps in regulation. International organisations, corporations, civil society organisations and individuals have all worked to make and enforce, also by judicial means, legal rules. But is all this sufficient?
