Statistics in Genetics and in the Environmental Sciences

Statistics in Genetics and in the Environmental Sciences by Luisa Turrin Fernholz, Stephan Morgenthaler, Werner Stahel
English | PDF | 2001 | 189 Pages | ISBN : 3764365757 | 18.3 MB

Statistics is strongly tied to applications in different scientific disciplines, and the most challenging statistical problems arise from problems in the sciences. In fact, the most innovative statistical research flows from the needs of applications in diverse settings. This volume is a testimony to the crucial role that statistics plays in scientific disciplines such as genetics and environmental sciences, among others. The articles in this volume range from human and agricultural genetic DNA research to carcinogens and chemical concentrations in the environment and to space debris and atmospheric chemistry. Also included are some articles on statistical methods which are sufficiently general and flexible to be applied to many practical situations.

Targeting Epigenetics in Inflammatory Lung Diseases by Gaurav Gupta, Brian G. Oliver, Kamal Dua, Md Khadem Ali, Piyush Dave
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 276 Pages | ISBN : 9819947790 | 21.2 MB

This book discusses the role of epigenetics in pathogenesis of different pulmonary diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, pulmonary tuberculosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary infections. It also explores post-translational modifications in DNA and histones for improving the understanding of lung diseases. This book helps in understanding the epigenetic mechanisms towards the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Further, the book provides insight into the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in the epigenetic regulation of inflammation, which may have novel implications in designing small molecule inhibitors that target the epigenetic machinery for the effective treatment of a variety of inflammation‑related diseases. This book is a valuable resource for academics, research and industry professionals working in respiratory biology.

Coarse-Grained Modelling of DNA and DNA Self-Assembly by Thomas E. Ouldridge
English | PDF | 2012 | 180 Pages | ISBN : 3642305164 | 4.1 MB

This thesis presents a novel coarse-grained model of DNA, in which bases are represented as rigid nucleotides. The model is shown to quantitatively reproduce many phenomena, including elastic properties of the double-stranded state, hairpin formation in single strands and hybridization of pairs of strands to form duplexes, the first time such a wide range of properties has been captured by a coarse-grained model. The scope and potential of the model is demonstrated by simulating DNA tweezers, an iconic nanodevice, and a two-footed DNA walker — the first time that coarse-grained modelling has been applied to dynamic DNA nanotechnology.
