The Politics of Children’s Rights and Representation

The Politics of Children’s Rights and Representation

The Politics of Children’s Rights and Representation by Bengt Sandin, Jonathan Josefsson, Karl Hanson, Sarada Balagopalan
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 343 Pages | ISBN : 3031044797 | 8.7 MB

This edited volume investigates children and youth's deep entanglement in today's major global, national, and local transformations and processes: wherein they are not mere spectators and objects of transformations but instead actively shape them through various social, economic, and political representations. International contributions illuminate the problems that arise when children's rights and participation become a site of contestation and power over who represents whom, what, when, and where. The authors do not provide simple solutions, instead offering an understanding of the fundamental nature of these problems as founded in the application of rights and the nature of representation in modern society. Together, the authors emphasize that child representation must take into account the local and spatial context of how representations of children are discussed, as well as possible discrepancies between local, regional, national, and global processes.

Childhood, Learning & Everyday Life in Three Asia-Pacific Cities: Experiences from Melbourne, Hong Kong and Singapore by I-Fang Lee, Sue Saltmarsh, Nicola Yelland
English | PDF,EPUB | 2023 | 160 Pages | ISBN : 9819904854 | 16.1 MB

This book introduces findings from an international, cross-cultural, and interdisciplinary study of children’s everyday experiences of growing up and going to school in the context of the three global cities of Hong Kong, Singapore and Melbourne. It takes the premise that children’s learning and orientations to educational success are shaped by everyday cultural practices at home and at school, by policy contexts that both produce and respond to educational and cultural norms, and by individual and familial desires and aspirations. Drawing on research conducted with primary school-aged children in Year 4, the book considers how day-to-day routines such as going to school, engaging in extra-curricular activities outside of school, and spending time at home with family intersect with the broader milieus of education policy ideals in a changing and interconnected world. Through a combination of visual methodologies, surveys, ethnographic observations in schools, classrooms and cityscapes, re-enactments of everyday activities with children at home, and sociological education policy analysis, this book shows both the richness of children’s everyday lives and learning in global cities, as well as exploring questions that pose challenges to educational and social norms.

Online Resilience and Wellbeing in Young People: Representing the Youth Voice by Andy Phippen
English | EPUB | 2022 | 130 Pages | ISBN : 3030886336 | 0.4 MB

“Drawing on academic and practical expertise, Phippen and Street offer a much needed youth-centered and evidence-based approach to safeguarding young people online. Constructive and accessible, but upfront and unapologetic about the need to rethink taken-for-granted assumptions about youth, digital media and risk, this book is required reading for those working in the field. The book deftly builds a case for reform to policy and practice, and presents a workable and practical model for doing so.”

Unpacking School Lunch: Understanding the Hidden Politics of School Food by Marcus B. Weaver-Hightower
English | PDF | 2022 | 308 Pages | ISBN : 3030972879 | 6.8 MB

This book delves into the heated political battles over what kids eat at school, shedding light onto how policymakers craft food policy for schools. The book takes readers inside schools, through the history of school food programs in the United States and England, and into the policy terrain that makes school lunch difficult to change. Through diverse case studies—hungry linebackers, pink slime, English reality television and policy making, pizza as a vegetable, lunch shaming, and more—chapters provide detailed analysis of rhetorical tactics, arguments over, and policy for school feeding. The book concludes with a progressive vision of school food that is healthy, pleasurable, educative, shame-free, and, most importantly, free for all students, just like the rest of school.
