Mari Kodama is a Japanese pianist, sister to pianist and duo partner Momo Kodama, and spouse of conductor Kent Nagano. She was born in Osaka, and due to her father's travels, she was raised in Germany, France, Switzerland, and England. At age 14, she entered the Paris Conservatory, studying piano with Germain Mounier and chamber music with Geneviève Joy-Dutilleux. In 1984, she gave her debut performance in Japan, followed quickly by performances in Europe and the United States. She has played at various music festivals, such as the Mostly Mozart Festival, the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, Music Days at Forest Hill, and other international festivals in Lyon, Montpelier, Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence, Aldeburgh, San Francisco, Sapporo, and Gmunden. She has performed Beethoven's complete Piano Sonatas in a series of recitals in Los Angeles and Pasadena, and recorded them for PentaTone Classics.

When Allen Toussaint died of a heart attack on November 10 of last year, it was a shock to just about everyone, since the famed pianist had still been extremely active, to the point where he’d been set to perform a sold-out show in London on Nov. 15 and to perform a benefit concert with Paul Simon in New Orleans less than a month later. While his absence is still felt even now, we hope this news will help fill at least some small portion of the void: The Complete Warner Recordings, which has been out of print since the sellout of its limited-edition Rhino Handmade release, is now available once more.

The ten Sonatas for piano and violin (for it is under this singular appellation that they were originally published) date from the first maturity of Beethoven; 1798 to 1803 for the first nine, 1812 for the last. A surprising design - no doubt a publisher's affair, which did not want to frighten the amateur violinists - for most of which are genuine double concertos without orchestra, especially the sonata "A Kreutzer" (originally designed for violinist George Bridgetower With whom Beethoven sintered shortly afterwards, and then dedicated to Rodolphe Kreutzer, who found it unintelligible … the hazards of history which gives to a masterpiece the name of an obscure personage who certainly does not deserve it!) Of which we know The squarely symphonic amplitude.

With more than a million copies sold, the soundtrack of Gérard Corbiau's film 'Farinelli' contributed considerably to the international renown of Les Talens Lyriques, in 1994. Back then the voice of the castrato Carlo Broschi, known as Farinelli (1705-1782), was created using a computer to mix the voices of countertenor Derek Lee Ragin and soprano Ewa Mallas-Godlewska.

It was between 1900 and 1930 that Ravel composed these works; from the Menuet Antique right up to La Valse, Europe, and indeed the world, are full of frenzy, acceleration, fury and finally explosion. Did this monstrous machine ever stop? It was at the end of 2015, that Hélène Tysman recorded this disc, and two phrases in particular which inspired her for this programme still resonate: the quotation of Henri de Régnier, highlighting the Valses Nobles et sentimentales, who talks of "the delicious and ongoing pleasure of a useless occupation", and the exchanges between two aristocrats, present at a soirée preceding the 1830 revolution, who observe; "we are dancing on a volcano", a phrase which would inspire Jean Renoir for La règle du jeu in 1939.

Composed almost 20 years apart, the two violin concertos by Dmitri Shostakovich were both conceived with the great violinist David Oistrakh in mind and dedicated to him. Shostakovich completed Concerto No. 1 in 1948, at a time when he had fallen out of grace with the Soviet authorities and it seemed uncertain if the work would ever be performed in public. This is reflected in the concerto which begins with a dark and solitary violin song over gloomy cellos and double basses.

Arthur Conley sang and (with mentor Otis Redding) co-wrote the 1967 classic "Sweet Soul Music," arguably the finest record ever made about the genre it celebrates. Conley was just 12 years old when he joined the Evening Smiles, a gospel group that appeared regularly on local radio station WAOK. By 1963 he was leading his own R&B outfit, Arthur & the Corvets, which over the next two years issued three singles "Poor Girl," "I Believe," and "Flossie Mae" for the Atlanta label National Recording Company. Despite Conley's graceful yet powerful vocals (which owed an immense debt to his idol, Sam Cooke), the NRC singles earned little attention, and he dissolved the group to mount a solo career, releasing "I'm a Lonely Stranger" on the Ru-Jac label in late 1964.

Hungarian pianist-composer HAVASI’s life has revolved around the piano since the age of four, when he had his talent and perfect pitch discovered. During his studies he was extremely motivated by challenges and competitive situations. He would practice for ten hours a day to make the most of himself. He learned the trade of classical music with respect and humility, studied the lives and works of various masters, and graduated from Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Hungary. He came to recognise the huge responsibility involved in teaching, and taught in Budapest’s conservatory for years. As a performer of classical music he built up a vast repertoire, gave concerts in several towns across Europe, and won various piano contests.

After a false start with the late-'80s vocal group Maniquin, Kenny Lattimore became a minor R&B star in his own right in 1996 when his eponymous debut album generated two hit singles. Lattimore was born and raised in Washington, D.C., where he grew up in a musical family. Before he reached his teens, he was winning talent shows at his junior high school. Throughout high school he performed music, from classical to R&B. Despite his love for music, he decided to pursue architecture and city planning when he enrolled at Howard University.
