A world of musical influences were fused into the late-1960s and early-70s music of Montreal-based Druick & Lorange. Combining the talents of guitarist/vocalist Kirk Lorange and Dave Druick, the duo released one self-titled album, produced by Marty Lewis, in 1974, before the E.A.R. label declared bankruptcy and went out of business. Although it was reissued, in 1975, by the Goodear label, Lorange was so frustrated by the experience that he moved to Australia, where he's continued to awe audiences with his soulful slide guitar playing as a soloist and a member of the Marc Hunter Band and Glenn Sharrock Band. …

Two internationally renowned musicians, Mikis Theodorakis from Greece and Zülfü Livaneli from Turkey, have – at a time of considerable political tension between their two countries – made a record together. Five compositions by each of the two artists were recorded in Instanbul and in Athens respectively. For 18 weeks this LP was top of the Turkish charts, and in September 1986, the 'Golden Record' was presented to Mikis Theodorakis personally in Istanbul.

For me the most underrated and unknown LP since years. "Break the power of the monopolies": propaganda against capitalism, imperialism and fascism, for socialism, communism and the peace movement, served with folk rock and acid kraut on the Pläne label. Of course the German lyrics are the other half of the game, often not sung but spoken. If you fancy Lokomotive Kreuzberg, Floh de Cologne or 3 Tornados, don't miss it.

Zairean Bony Bikaye's Felaesque chants (sans agitprop, avec Afrobeat girls) provide the identity, but the substructure is all French-Algerian Hector Zazou, whose synth arrangements are praised for their orchestral density and distinguished by their propulsive linearity. Most of the Afrogallic music I've heard makes too much (Toure Kunda) or too little (Manu Dibango) of its Africanness. This strikes me as an original balance: minimalist Eurodisco that trades pseudosophistication for pseudoprimitivism.

This album presents to its listener a sample of the Rochester Rock'n'Roll scene from 1979 to 1980. It goes without question that some of the tracks are a bit crude, but it reflects the feel of the groups at their particular stages of growth.

The only re-release was a bootleg-CD from Germanophon, ripped from Vinyl in 1995. Apart from the fact that it's only in 16Bit/44kHz, it had less noise than this rip from a record used for over 40 years now. The brass section makes you think of Blood, Sweat & Tears or Chicago, track 2 reminds me of Jane. Most lyrics are harsh criticism of the socio-political situation in the early 70s.

Antler Records is an Independent Alternative Music label from Belgium (Aarschot). It was founded in the early 80's by Roland Beelen and Maurice Engelen. Initially they launched the label Kleo, then in the early 80's, evolved into Antler Records. Sometime later, they merged with Subway around 1989, to form a new independent company: Antler-Subway Records NV, in order to follow the most recent dance movements of the time. They also did appropriate new beat clothing.

The first time I listened to this music, I was awed. It's so unlike all the other synthesis music, the Jazz Rock whatever. It's cosmic without being pretentious and down to earth without being trivial, at once freaky and funky, and altogether of the spirit, created in a free get together of the spirit. All that happens happens because they're creating it as they will, out of and into all that they happen to be. And the more I listened, the more I was out of and into myself, which is what this music is about.

Allied to the more organic, instrumental groovesters in the American post-rock scene led by Tortoise, Ui focuses on angular grooves provided by a dual-bass attack. The New York band was formed in 1990 by bassist Sasha Frere-Jones (formerly of the group Dolores and probably better known as a journalist than a musician) and drummer Clem Waldmann. … As part of a tour that year with Tortoise and Labradford, Ui signed a contract with Chicago's Southern Records. … The group collaborated with Techno Animal and Luke Vibert, among others in the experimental electronica underground, before teaming up with Stereolab for the Fires EP, released as Uilab. A second album, Lifelike, followed in 1998. …

Not much positive to say about this last recording by Satin Whale: They try to sound like Foreigner or Toto, but that's a fight they can't win. Mostly stupid lyrics, low quality mixing, low quality vinyl pressing. The only positive aspect: Now you know you've been searching for nothing important.
