Per molti anni il regista Rithy Panh ha cercato una fotografia scattata tra il 1975 e il 1979, periodo in cui in Cambogia detenevano il potere i Khmer Rossi. Convinto che una fotografia, nonostante non sia la prova concreta di un omicidio di massa, permetta di pensare a molte cose, di meditare e di riscrivere la Storia, l'ha ricercata invano negli archivi, tra vecchi documenti e nelle campagne della Cambogia, arrivando alla conclusione che sia andata persa. Ha deciso così di ricorrere al cinema restituendo non uno scatto o la ricerca di una sola fotografia ma l'immagine di una ricerca.
