The Italian film star, Vittorio Gassman, has a capital chance to exercise his skill as a nimble farceur and mimic in the lively Italian film, "Love and Larceny".

Playing a petty swindler who is so adroit that he ultimately swindles himself in the climactic one of a succession of ingenious and comical frauds, Mr. Gassman has an opportunity to impersonate a dozen or so odd types and get himself up in an assortment of make-up disguises and costumes.

In one pitch, early in the picture, he is a rotund Santa Claus, shaking money out of suckers for a bogus children-of-prisoners fund. In another, he is a Bolognese merchant helping a shifty confederate defraud an unreasonably gullible victim in a thoroughly impossible deal. In yet another, he is a Japanese bridegroom and, again, a game-legged, iron-jawed general.

Farce is the basic exposition in this virtually one-man show. It hasn't the character variations of, say, "Big Deal on Madonna Street." But it does have much of the same dryness and gusto of that Roman comedy, in which, incidentally, Mr. Gassman first demonstrated his comic skill.

As his impish companion in this one. Peppino de Filippo makes one feel a great homesickness for those rubberized comedians that used to show up in American vaudeville. Dorian Gray is agile and attractive as his female confederate in a couple of deals, and little Anna Maria Ferrero is charming as the girl who hooks him. Dino Risi's direction is farcically efficient and fast—just what is needed in such a picture
