Three cousins, Luis Antonio (Pedro Infante), José Luis (Abel Salazar) and Luis Manuel (Victor Manuel Mendoza), raised by a strict, cigar-chomping grandmother (Sara García), fall for their American-born cousin Lupita (Marga López). Their infatuation threatens to tear them apart, until Grandma steps in to solve the matter. Meanwhile, a specter from the young men's past returns to endanger the entire family.

Made in 1946, this is one of the best slapstick comedies ever, starting from the first scene with the cigar smoking grandmother, played to the max by Sara Garcia, who's comedic timing is perfection. The way she wields her cane will have you howling with laughter.
Pedro Infante is also marvelous and funny as her tequila drinking grandson, and so are Abel Salazar as his gentle, poor cousin, and Victor Manuel Mendoza as his vain, rich one. The trios they sing are a delight. I especially like the "Cielito Lindo"…it's a lovely rendition of this favorite song.

The charro/bullfighting scene is sensational, and the sepia toned cinematography wonderful. Though it has an occasional line going through it in the first part of the film, it's amazingly clear…and you'll be so amused that you'll forget that your're watching a film that's 60 years old. If nothing else but to see these hilarious performances (oh ! Sara is a jewel !) this is one not to miss. (amazon)

After a couple of more or less fruitful attempts at working together, director Ismael Rodríguez and actor/singer Pedro Infante set a highwater mark for Mexican cinema when they took to its highest expression the prototype of the likeable male, mujeriego, a drunkard envied by men and coveted by women, who has cigar in his mouth, a cane in his hand and crucifix on his chest but is always faithful to his all-powerful mother represented by Sara García. This is Los Tres Garcia.

Pedro Infante, who incarnates the protégé of the matriarca García became, thanks to this film - and to its immediate sequel The Return of the Garcías (1946) - an unquestionably popular idol of Mexican cinema.

To support Pedro Infante Ismael Rodriguez put together a no less outstanding cast: Marga López, the unforgettable tearful icon, a model of honesty, a beautiful, noble, and faithful woman; Lupita Smith - the girl whose love is pursued by the three brothers (Infante, Abel Salazar and Víctor Manuel Mendoza); and Fernando Soto "Mantequilla" in his unforgettable Tranquilino role: a likeable, unconditional, clumsy and unprepared server.

To watch time and time again The Three Garcías is an indispensable exercise for those who wish to relive or to understand traditional Mexican society so present even now throughout this immense country. All this through a pleasant story with songs without whose existence the collective subconscious of this nation could not exist.(theseriouscomedysite.com)
