Pierre, a journalist, and Paul, a writer who has higher aspirations but supports his wife and child by being a house painter, accept a commission to write a television script about a real-life event that, several years before, had made a couple of headlines and then fizzled out.
The object of their inquiry is Rosemonde, a pretty seemingly phlegmatic girl who may or may not have tried to kill her uncle with his old Army rifle. The uncle swore she did. She swore that she didn't, that he had accidently shot himself. Because there were no witnesses and because the uncle did not die the case was dropped.
"La Salamandre" is the story of an investigation that concludes in very un-Swiss confusion. Pierce undertakes to do the research, seeking out the uncle, Rosamonde's friends and finally Rosamonde herself. Paul abhors facts, and prefers instead to exercise his novelist's imagination.
For a small fee, Rosemonde, who has been working in a sausage factory with no great esprit, agrees to cooperate. She answers all questions freely and even has desultory affairs with both, but the better the writers get to know her the more mysterious she seems, until at last she becomes practically transparent, someone whose existence is felt while she remains beyond understanding, in effect, unseen.
At the same time, Rosemonde is the mythical salamander who lives in fire, not only unburnt but, to the bafflement of Pierre and Paul, also blissfully unperturbed.

Tanner's method is clear-eyed and factual, almost dead-panned, growing ever more so as Pierre and Paul find themselves increasingly at a loss with their subject. Its sense of comedy reminds of both Truffaut ("Jules and Jim") and early Godard, whose love for the young Anna Karina in "Vivre Sa Vie" and "Bande à Part" is recalled by Tanner's fascination with Bulle Ogier. She is sometimes beautiful, sometimes brilliant, sometimes a slob, sometimes beyond mortal comprehension—and always infinitely appealing. She is a woman loved.

Pierre est journaliste et fauché. Pour se refaire, il décide d’accepter une proposition d’adaptation scénaristique d’un fait divers pour les besoins d’un téléfilm. Pour l’épauler dans cette tâche, il fait appel à son ami Paul, un écrivain tout aussi désargenté. Tous deux vont d’abord tenter de se passionner pour cette histoire d’"accident" de fusil de chasse entre un oncle et sa nièce, avant de nourrir une fascination pour cette dernière, la troublante Rosemonde…

"Chronique en couleurs noires et blanches", comme le proclame le générique, "La Salamandre" est le deuxième long métrage d’Alain Tanner. Réalisé avec très peu de moyens, il possède pourtant une force et une sincérité rarement égalés.
Les thèmes : la révolte brute, émotionnelle d’une jeune femme, la question de l’identité, la solitude, la recherche du bonheur (souvent vaine), l’errance (urbaine ou bucolique), la tentation du départ, l’enlisement des velléités révolutionnaires, étouffées dans l’œuf de mai 68.
Film de dialogue plus que de situation, "La Salamandre" fuit le réel dans des poses théâtrales d’une torpeur inattendue. Il faut entendre l’incongrue voix-off proclamer comme un slogan que les fêtes de noël se font "menaçantes à l’horizon", Pierre (Jean-Luc Bideau, plus en forme que jamais) et Paul (Jacques Denis, très juste) chanter à tue-tête, hilares, les pieds dans la neige ou le patron de Rosemonde, lui proposer, sourire en coin: "Hum… ça vous dirait de faire un petit tour en Alfa, un de ces jours?". Le sommet étant atteint par un échange évoquant ostensiblement Godard entre Pierre et Rosemonde (Bulle Ogier, unique et inoubliable féministe en mini-jupe de cuir). Nulle surprise, dans ces conditions, si le thème de l’aliénation par le travail, constante du cinéma d’auteur du début des années 70, passe d’abord par le rire et l’allusion sexuelle. Mais ici, subtilement, le rire se lézarde pour céder la place à la contestation politique.
