Pier Paolo Pasolini - La Rabbia (1963)

En 1962 la televisión italiana tuvo una brillante idea: la de invitar a un director de cine a responder a la pregunta: ¿por qué en todo el mundo se teme a la guerra? El director tendría acceso a los archivos de los informativos televisivos del periodo 1945-1962 y podría editar el material que quisiera y redactar un comentario para acompañarlo. El programa sería de una hora. La pregunta era "candente" porque, en ese momento, el miedo a otra guerra mundial cundía realmente por doquier. La crisis de los misiles nucleares entre Cuba, Estados Unidos y la URSS había tenido lugar en octubre de 1962.

La televisión preguntó a Pasolini, que ya había realizado Accattone, Mamma Roma y La Ricotta, y que era una figura polémica habitual en los titulares. Y éste aceptó. Rodó la película y la tituló La rabbia. (elpais.com)



La Rabbia employs documentary footage (from the 1950's) and accompanying commentary to attempt to answer the existential question, Why are our lives characterized by discontent, anguish, and fear? Part I, by Pasolini, is a denunciation of the offenses of Western culture, particularly those against colonized Africa. It is at the same time a chronicle of the liberation and independence of the former African colonies, portraying these peoples as the new protagonists of the world stage, holding up Marxism as their "salvation," and suggesting that their "innocent ferocity" will be the new religion of the era.
