Harold Lloyd: The Definitive Collection (1921-1936) [REPOST]

The Digital Fix Film

Optimum Home Entertainment have announced the UK DVD release of Harold Lloyd: The Definitive Collection on 9th July 2007. Harold Lloyd was one of the great comic stars of the cinema, a genius on a par with Chaplin and Keaton. Born in Burchard, Nebraska, on April 20, 1893 Lloyd was acting at an early age with theatrical repertory companies. He made his film debut as an extra in a 1913 one-reel film for the Edison Film Company. He became friends with another extra, Hal Roach, and when Roach formed his own film company, he invited Lloyd to join him.

Lloyd’s initial comic characterization was a tramp character called Willie Work. After a series of partings over money and subsequent reconciliations, Roach and Lloyd created a new character, called Lonesome Luke, which became popular, despite Lloyd’s dislike of imitating Charlie Chaplin, which the film distributor, Pathe, demanded.

Then Lloyd found the idea that was to become his trademark, and change him from a good comedian to a major star: the glasses. Lloyd persuaded Roach and his distributor to abandon Lonesome Luke and in 1917 Lloyd shed grotesque comedy clothes and characterizations for a pair of horn-rimmed glasses. In doing so, Lloyd created an American archetype, an optimistic and determined go-getter sporting spectacles and a toothy smile.

Lloyd retained the “Glass Character” (as Lloyd called his comic persona) throughout the rest of his motion picture career, which spanned 34 years and over 200 comedies. Among his most famous films are Grandma's Boy (1922), Safety Last! (1923), The Freshman (1925), The Kid Brother (1927), Speedy (1928), and Movie Crazy (1932), all included here amongst many other gems in this most comprehensive of collections.

This 9-disc collection holds 16 features and 12 short films along with exclusive extra features.

Harold Lloyd: The Definitive Collection (1921-1936) [REPOST]

Harold Lloyd (1893-1971), the famous "man hanging from the clock face," is, with Keaton and Chaplin, one of three geniuses of silent film comedy. With his trademark glasses, toothy grin, and character that vividly reflected the era of the 20s, Lloyd became the most popular comedian on the screen, producing more movies than Keaton and Chaplin combined. He created the language of "thrill" comedy, influencing not only his contemporaries, but also modern directors and writers as well - his race-to-the-rescue scene in Girl Shy was the model for the final sequence of 'The Graduate'.

Harold Lloyd was not only the most popular comedian of the 1920's but, by the close of the silent era, the biggest box office draw in motion pictures.
~ Richard Koszarski, Film Historian and Author

In the heyday of silent comedy the three all time greats were Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. Millions queued to see their films at the cinema in the days before TV, DVD and all the multimedia of today.

Arguably Lloyd is the lesser known of the three (known as "the man on the clock" in Tom Dardis's excellent film biography), but for me his work is probably the most entertaining of the three. Chaplin's work, although clearly the creation of a genius, is too sentimental for many today. Keaton's brilliant legacy continues to burn brightly and is well known, but if you're not familiar with Harold Lloyd then grab this set while you can. The stories are eternal - boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back in the final reel sagas but the slapstick is still very funny, the stories are packed with wonderful cinematic flourishes and Lloyd is a wonderfully sympathetic star. He started out trying to emulate Chaplin, but with his trademark glasses and hat he created an eternal comedy persona. A great physical comedian, who did his own stunts, Lloyd deserves to be celebrated by a new audience. All his great films are here - The Freshman, Speedy, The Kid Brother and Safety Last (the one on the clock face) and there is generally something enjoyable in all of them. I could wish for the much maligned "Professor Beware" (a talkie) to be included too but otherwise every film you could wish for is here. The remastering is excellent. Highly recommended.
