Storyline: One Touch of Venus with lyrics by Ogden Nash and Music by Kurt Weill opened on Broadway in 1943 and closed after 567 performances in 1945. It was considered very risque for its day, to the point that Marlene Dietrich quit during rehearsals saying it was, "too sexy and profane." (Thus giving Mary Martin a chance to become a star.) It satirized the American middle class, its values, and attitudes toward sex and romance, as well as satirizing the ugly and growing suburban American sprawl. In 1948 a Hollywood movie staring Ava Gardner was made that gutted the show, drastically rewriting the script cutting the dance sequences and most of the songs while rewriting the lyrics for few that remained. It was deservedly panned and did not do well. The sparkling wit and satire of Ogden Nash and J. S. Perelman (who wrote the script with Nash) was removed. But it had good color and production values. This version is a stage production from 1955 that was adapted for TV. Although adapted, most of the show remains in tact as do most of the songs and dance sequences. Janet Blair is far more lively than Ava and although it is in Black and White, and a live TV production with production values that are far lower than the film, it does have a soul and wit and retains the satire that had somehow vanished in the Hollywood version.
