This very expensive Italian-made adaptation of Homer's "The Odyssey" stars Kirk Douglas as seafaring hero Ulysses. The story begins, as ever, with Ulysses leaving his faithful wife Penelope (Silvano Magnano) behind as he goes off to fight in the Trojan Wars. Having the poor taste to set himself above the gods after a stunning military victory, Ulysses is doomed to journey aimlessly across the sea until he can make amends. Along the way, our hero battles a cyclops, resists the fatal singing of the Sirens, and enjoys a brief interlude with pig-fancying enchantress Circe (also played by Silvano Magnano). Years and years later, Ulysses returns to Penelope, where he must meet and master a final challenge.

Homer’s classic tale still looks good in this Italian version starring veteran actor Kirk Douglas in the title role, a superior adaptation of the ageless Odyssey. Directed by Mario Camerini, the film loosely follows the epic story of Homer’s hero Odysseus’ (Ulysses) ten-year journey back to his kingdom Ithaca following the Trojan War.

Of all the Greek heroes who fought at Troy, Ulysses was the one who was noted for his craftiness. It was he who had the idea to build the Trojan Horse and thus conquer Troy by guile after ten long years of siege. For this sin, and others (it seemed like he could never stay in the gods’ good graces for long) he was blown from island to island, shipwrecked, and passed through a multitude of adventures before coming home for good after his ten-year odyssey.

Ulysses and his men pass through hunger, where they kill Apollo’s cattle, thus earning his wrath for Ulysses. They are captured by the man-eating cyclops, who is made drunk and blinded by the crafty Ulysses. They pass the island of the sirens, whose voices lead men to shipwreck, by stuffing their ears with wax. They land on the island of Circe, the enchantress who turns Ulysses’ men into pigs.

Finally, Ulysses makes it home and has to disguise himself as a beggar because his beautiful wife Penelope is beset by worthless suitors. Clever Penelope has resolved to choose her suitor by seeing who can string the bow of Ulysses and shoot an arrow through twelve axe heads lined up like Ulysses used to do. The climax of the movie erupts in carnage as the only man able to string the bow is the "worthless beggar" that sits at the suitors feet!

Through all these adventures, Kirk Douglas portrays Ulysses with intelligence and purpose. This film shows the considerable depth of talent and ability Douglas has, as he dominates each scene, despite the costumes, supporting actors, beautiful women, and other distractions in this marvelous production.

The supporting actors are virtually all European, with dubbed voices, but they lend wonderful gravity to the scenes. An exception is Anthony Quinn, who does a bang-up job as the chief suitor, Antinous.

Silvana Mangano and Rossana Podesta provide the feminine pulchritude, and as in all Italian films of the era, it is melt in your mouth luscious! Their gowns are white, pleated garments that fit their forms like gloves, making their figures look like Italian marble… The ladies’ appearance makes it apparent why Ulysses (or any man) would fight twenty years to return to their side.
The sets and costuming are beyond reproach. The special effects, including the cyclops are excellent, especially considering it was 1954. Any comparison with today’s computer generated imagery should be avoided, but – this looks pretty dang real.
