Cattleman Alvarez Kelly (William Holden) is contracted to deliver a herd to the Union Army in Virginia. However, as he nears the end of his long cattle drive, Kelly is kidnapped by Confederate raiders led by Colonel Tom Rossiter (Richard Widmark). The Confederacy desperately needs the beef to feed its soldiers besieged in Richmond.

Kelly is "persuaded" (after having one of his fingers shot off by Rossiter) to help steal the herd. For revenge, he arranges passage for Rossiter's discontented Southern belle fiancée, Liz Pickering (Janice Rule), on a blockade runner leaving the city. Despite the hatred between the two men, they manage to work together. Kelly first teaches Rossiter's men how to drive cattle. Then, they proceed to capture and transport the herd, despite the efforts of Union officer Major Albert Stedman (Patrick O'Neal).
Alvarez Kelly is a 1966 war film set in the American Civil War. It starred William Holden and Richard Widmark. The film was based on the real-life Beefsteak Raid of September 1864.

Mentre la guerra di Secessione americana volge al termine, Alvarez Kelly, un ranchero di origine irlandese, viene incaricato di condurre una mandria di duemilacinquecento capi di bestiame all'esercito federale che è in procinto di attaccare la città di Richmond nella Virginia, ultimo caposaldo dell'esercito sudista. Ma uno di questi, il colonnello Rossiter progetta di razziare il bestiame e approfitta di un ricevimento presso una ricca possidente del luogo per fare prigioniero Alvarez e costringerlo ad accettare di rubare la mandria. Kelly, dopo aver tentato invano di sfuggire alla custodia del solerte sergente Hatcher e dopo essersi in un certo qual modo vendicato del sopruso subito facendo fuggire verso il nord la fidanzata di Rossiter, Liz Pickering, accetta di guidare la mandria verso la città. Ma la spedizione viene preceduta dal maggiore nordista Stedman che si apposta con uomini e cannoni presso un passaggio obbligato. I volumi di ripristino, o file .rev, sono file speciali creati da WinRAR e che possono essere utilizzati per ricostruire uno o più volumi mancanti o danneggiati di un archivio multi-volume. Questo comando ha senso solo per archivi multi-volume.
Questa prestazione può essere utile per copie di sicurezza o, ad esempio, quando postate un archivio multi-volume in un news-group e qualcuno degli utenti non ha ricevuto alcuni file. Postando solamente il volume di ripristino invece di tutti i file mancanti ai vari utenti, si può ridurre il numero dei file da rispedire.
Un file .rev permette di ricostruire un volume RAR mancante o danneggiato, uno qualsiasi di quelli che compongono l'archivio multi-volume. Ad esempio, se avete un archivio multi-volume composto da 30 volumi e 3 volumi di ripristino, potete ricostruire sino a 3 volumi presi tra qualsiasi dei 30 originali. Se il numero dei file .rev è inferiore al numero dei volumi da ricostruire, la ricostruzione è impossibile. Il numero totale dei volumi normali e di quelli di ripristino non può superare i 255.
I volumi originali RAR non devono essere modificati dopo la creazione dei volumi di ripristino. L'algoritmo di ripristino utilizza i dati memorizzati sia nei volumi di ripristino che in quelli RAR per ricostruire i volumi RAR mancanti. Quindi se modificate un volume RAR, ad esempio bloccandolo dopo aver creato dei file .REV, l'operazione di ripristino fallisce.
WinRAR ricostruisce i volumi mancanti o danneggiati sia cliccando direttamente su di un file .rev, sia utilizzando il comando rc (Il comando rc è un opzione da usare con rar versione dos, se si usa winrar per win non va considerata)
o automaticamente se non può individuare un volume seguente e trova un numero sufficiente di file .rev.
