Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down conveys the raw, chaotic urgency of ground-force battle in a worst-case scenario. With exacting detail, the film re-creates the American siege of the Somalian city of Mogadishu in October 1993, when a 45-minute mission turned into a 16-hour ordeal of bloody urban warfare. Helicopter-borne U.S. Rangers were assigned to capture key lieutenants of Somali warlord Muhammad Farrah Aidid, but when two Black Hawk choppers were felled by rocket-propelled grenades, the U.S. soldiers were forced to fend for themselves in the battle-torn streets of Mogadishu, attacked from all sides by armed Aidid supporters. Based on author Mark Bowden's bestselling account of the battle, Scott's riveting, action-packed film follows a sharp ensemble cast in some of the most authentic battle sequences ever filmed. The loss of 18 soldiers turned American opinion against further involvement in Somalia, but Black Hawk Down makes it clear that the men involved were undeniably heroic.

I’m pretty sure that after the disaster of Pearl Harbor, Producer Jerry Bruckheimer took a long hard look at himself, and finally realized that if you anally rape a historical event the way he did with Pearl Harbor, his career would lay down the gutter. Sure money is no problem (despite warnings Pearl Harbor managed to gross 240 million, a disgrace), but your reputation gets seriously fucked up. So now, he finally took his next project even more seriously, and teamed up with director Ridley Scott and screenwriter Ken Nolan to produce an intense and highly powered drama that is Black Hawk Down, a faithful rehash of the disastrous incursion of American Delta Forces in war-torn Somalia in 1993. Though the film is a Bruckheimer action vehicle, when you see it, there’s hardly any trace of his trademark and feels more like an Anti-Bruckheimer movie. Despite some flaws, the film manages to hold to it’s message, and the gear-shifting that Bruckheimer has, ultimately is rewarding into what could be his best film since The Rock or Enemy Of The State.

Black Hawk Down (2001)

The story goes like this: The country of Somalia has been torn by war, with warlord Mohammed Farrah Aidid trying to take control of the government by force. He would eventually do it, but then spread a dictatorship that starved the nation. The UN filed a warrant for his arrest, and soon The US Marines started planning his overthrow and restoring of peace to the country. Intelligence reports that two of Aidid’s Lieutenants are to have a meeting downtown in Mogadishu, capital of Somalia. General William Garrison (an aged Sam Sheppard) plans the strike on October 3rd and the air raid takes off. The fleet, commanded by Captain Mike Steele (Jason Issacs) heads off towards the target site, along with the main characters: Staff Sergeant Matt Eversmann (Josh Harnett) and Company Clerk John Grimes (Ewan McGregor). The strike and bust of the Somali fighters was to take only an hour, but nobody expected the 15-hour hell that was to come as an enraged army of Somali militia would shoot down two Black Hawk helicopters, and the ensuing battle would cost the lives of 18 American soldiers and over a hundred Somali rebels, as well as 73 American soldiers wounded.

The film’s major high is that it stays faithful this time to the actual events that happened during the entire mission-gone-awry. The fighting scenes are as brutal as it gets, and the ever-present suspense never leaves off despite the fact that we know what the outcome of the battle is. This film is basically another view of the god-awful shitty hell that is war, but surprisingly coming from an action guy like Jerry Bruckheimer. Screenwriter Ken Nolan, who based it off the best-selling non-fiction book by Mark Bowden, manages to go directly to the point in what happened in those excruciating 15 hours of combat into just 2 and a half hours. There’s plenty of gore in this film, though not as much as in Saving Private Ryan, where man-to-man combat was even fiercer because, hell, it was WWII. Still we’re taken into the soldiers’ desperate attempts to stay alive, and their horrors, and we feel their pain and desperation. Ridley Scott successfully accomplishes in building the atmosphere of the movie.

Black Hawk Down (2001)

Only a few problems lie within the film. The script forgets about character development. We never get to know anything about any of the main characters, and the film just portrays them as people running around trying to stay alive. That can be explained, since the film only focuses on the events that happened on that tragic October 3rd, and leaves the character development aside since the main point of the movie is to show you what happened. Still it somewhat hampers the film since character development is important for us to know what the actual feelings of the characters. Another flaw that I encountered is the sometimes-present Bruckheimer-panache of comedic antics that may border on the ridiculous. Some of the scenes of rescue, where Lt Col. McKnight is just standing around with all that enemy fire around him, and no shell hits him, annoyed me a little, but other than that, the film pushes on and never looks back

The performances are great, with Josh Harnett rebounding from his embarrassment in Pearl Harbor, Ewan McGregor is also good, though with all the soldiers covered in mud, sometimes its hard to recognize who is who. The rest of the supporting cast was great, despite Jason Isaacs sometimes forgetting his British accent. Director Ridley Scott is still showing that he’s a versatile director, and Jerry Bruckheimer is finally growing as a serious producer.

In the end, the film is a must-see, and surely one of the surprise hits of the year. Black Hawk Down really lives up to its name, and despite a few cinematic flaws, it’s sure is one hell of a ride. Lets hope Jerry Bruckheimer keeps on maturing when it comes to films with historical facts. This one scores dead on, and surely its one not to miss.
Black Hawk Down (2001)

As a fan of war movies and a supreme admirer of any and all who serve in the Armed Forces, I've long been frustrated by the rarity of quality product. Hollywood either wants to churn out flag-waving fantasies like "Pearl Harbor" and "Top Gun" or let its more cultured crowd turn out insulting anti-military films like "Apocalypse Now".

Which is why "Black Hawk Down" is so unbelievably refreshing. It is a respectful and fair portrayal of the military, showcasing their sense of honor and brotherhood with neither disdain nor hero worship. It is one of the few war films to focus solely on combat, and in that context it finds a way to showcase what men can do under extraordinary conditions.

But back to my original statement. From the psychotic and sadistic soldiers of "Platoon" to the babbling Kurtz in "Apocalypse Now", Hollywood's elite have not been very complimentary of the military, especially in modern war. "Three Kings" showcases soldiers who are unskilled and uninformed. "The Thin Red Line" lingers forever on American G.I.s swarming the Japenese camp in animal-like fashion acting like Nazis. R. Lee Ermey himself called "Apocalypse Now" an embarrassment to all Vietnam vets.

Black Hawk Down (2001)

This is not to deny that some atrocities were committed. War is hell. But the tendency seems to be to paint ALL the soldiers with that same negative brush. A newsflash to the impressionable….all soldiers are not like that.

In fact, many are the opposite. And "Black Hawk Down" does them justice. We see a huge cast of characters, admittedly few of which get a chance to distinguish themselves before we head off into battle. This is not a mistake, this is a clever move. Each soldier gets a chance to distinguish himself by his actions, not as "the funny guy" or "the Brooklyn guy" or "the weakling". They become memorable to us because of what they do in the field, and further draws into the central idea of "No man gets left behind". Downed pilot Ron Eldard isn't rescued because he's a nice guy, or he has a family, or the others look up to him. He's saved because he's a U.S. soldier, and we don't leave our own behind.

Ridley Scott is on a roll and can seemingly do anything. His only stamp is realism, and he puts this battle before the cameras with a sense of harrowing reality that I've never experienced before. From the constant stream of animals and civilians through the gunfire, to the soldiers with their blood type on their boots, to the soldier who just can't understand why he has to go back out into the fight, its all real. Scott keeps the camera focused enough so that, unlike other war films, we always know where we are, who is where, and what is supposed to happen. It is to Scott's credit that he perfectly and effortlessly conveys the objectives, problems, and solutions of a complex military battle.

Black Hawk Down (2001)

Despite scarce downtime, many of the actors do get a chance to distinguish themselves. Tom Sizemore has always been a favorite of mine, and here he again plays the veteran, the guy who has done this a million times and walks calmly through a battlefield while others duck for cover. Josh Hartnett erases the overdone drama of "Pearl Harbor" to give a great central performance- a leader of men who is thrust into the position and has to learn on the go. Ewan McGregor has one of the film's greatest moments of selfless heroism. Jason Isaacs and William Fichtner are also perfect as two very different types of battlefield leaders. One is by the book, cool and calculating even under fire. The other is all emotion and heart, willing to adapt and take risks when the situation calls for it. The film shows that both are needed.

Eric Bana was so mesmerizing in "Chopper" (see it!) and plays completely the opposite here. But his mysterious and ever-calm professional is the film's most memorable performance. Hoot would in most modern war films be the jaded character who constantly points out the futility of their actions or the "injustice and meddling of the government". Instead he is real. "When that first bullet flies by your head, politics and all of that bull*hit goes right out the window," he says calmly.

Black Hawk Down (2001)

"Black Hawk Down" is not ignorant of its politics. It wisely understands that yes, as most war films redundantly say, "war is hell". But its necessary. It understands that yes, we often times protect our interests, but that doesn't negate the justice and good found in helping a starving and oppressed country like Somalia. But in the end, the film is concerned with combat, and the camaraderie and selfless bravery that our men and women in uniform often exhibit. It perfectly explains its simplicity and focus on combat, and why the military does the things they do. "When you're out there, its about the man next to you. That's all it is."

"Black Hawk Down" is an amazing film, and couldn not not be more timely. Most importantly however, it is the fair and respectful portrayal that our military has deserved for quite some time.
