Il film porta al cinema un ritratto intimo e complesso dello scrittore David Foster Wallace, una delle stelle della letteratura americana e mondiale dei nostri anni, morto suicida il 12 settembre del 2008. Il libro di Lipsky, da cui il film è tratto, è la cronaca di cinque giorni da lui trascorsi assieme a DFW mentre era in giro per gli Stati Uniti per un tour di reading del suo "Infinite Jest", e The End of the Tour lo adatta aggiungendoci anche alcuni spunti dalla biografia ufficiale dello scrittore, "Ogni storia d’amore è una storia di fantasmi" (Einaudi), firmata dal giornalista del New Yorker D.T. Max.
