Small-time pool hustler "Fast Eddie" Felson from Oakland, California travels cross-country with his partner Charlie to challenge the legendary player "Minnesota Fats". Arriving at Ames, Fats's home pool hall, Eddie declares he will win $10,000 that night. Fats arrives and he and Eddie agree to play for $200 a game. After initially falling behind, Eddie surges back to being $1,000 ahead and suggests raising the bet to $1,000 a game; Fats agrees.

IMDB: Rating 8.1/10

The Hustler - 50th Anniversary Edition (1961)

He sends out a runner, Preacher, to Johnny's Bar, ostensibly for a bottle of whiskey, but really to get professional gambler Bert Gordon to the hall. Eddie gets ahead $11,000 and Charlie tries to convince him to quit, but Eddie insists the game will end only when Fats says it is over. Fats agrees to continue after Bert labels Eddie a "loser." After 25 hours and an entire bottle of bourbon, Eddie is ahead over $18,000, but loses it all along with all but $200 of his original stake.

The Hustler - 50th Anniversary Edition (1961)

At their hotel later, Eddie leaves half of the remaining stake with a sleeping Charlie and leaves. Eddie stashes his belongings at the local bus terminal, where he meets Sarah Packard, an alcoholic "college girl" who walks with a limp. He meets her again at a bar. They go back to her place but she refuses to let him in, saying he is "too hungry." Eddie moves into a rooming house and starts hustling for small stakes. He finds Sarah again and this time she takes him in, but with reservations. Charlie finds Eddie at Sarah's and tries to persuade him to go back out on the road. Eddie refuses and Charlie figures out he plans to challenge Fats again. Eddie realizes that Charlie held out his percentage and becomes enraged, believing that with that money he could have rebounded to beat Fats. Eddie dismisses Charlie as a scared old man and tells him to "go lie down and die" by himself.

The Hustler - 50th Anniversary Edition (1961)

At Johnny's Bar, Eddie finds a poker game where Bert is sitting and Eddie loses $20. After the game, Bert tells Eddie that he has talent as a pool player but no character. He figures that Eddie will need at least $3,000 to challenge Fats again. Bert calls him a "born loser" but nevertheless offers to stake him in return for 75% of his winnings but Eddie refuses.

Eddie hustles a local pool shark, who breaks Eddie's thumbs. Sarah cares for him and tells him she loves him, but he cannot say the words in return. When his thumbs heal, Eddie agrees to Bert's terms, deciding that a "twenty-five percent slice of something big is better than a hundred percent slice of nothing."

The Hustler - 50th Anniversary Edition (1961)

The Hustler is a 1961 American Sports drama film directed by Robert Rossen from the 1959 novel of the same name he and Sidney Carroll adapted for the screen. It tells the story of small-time pool hustler "Fast Eddie" Felson and his desire to prove himself the best player in the country by beating legendary pool player "Minnesota Fats." After initially losing to Fats and getting involved with unscrupulous manager Bert Gordon, Eddie returns to beat Fats, but only after paying a terrible personal price.

The Hustler - 50th Anniversary Edition (1961)

The Hustler Blu-ray, Video Quality
The Hustler looks absolutely gorgeous on Blu-ray courtesy of an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.34:1. The film's special edition DVD from a few years ago looked pretty spectacular itself, and that same sharpness and clarity is only increased on this new release. There is virtually no damage, save for some very, very minor issues, on the source elements and the richness of the blacks is really amazing at times. Contrast is exceptional, and fine detail is completely intact with a very natural looking grain structure. Fox has done itself proud once again with this release. Rossen's insistence to film The Hustler on location pays off incredibly well, and the grimy aspect of the city and the pool halls is virtually palpable on this new release. Shadow detail is also quite remarkable at times, bringing new dimension into the murky scenes during the showdown segments. This film won a well deserved Oscar for its black and white cinematography, and The Hustler's gorgeously gritty look is fully on display on this new Blu-ray.

The Hustler - 50th Anniversary Edition (1961)

The Hustler Blu-ray, Audio Quality
Some may accuse me of being a little churlish with my score of The Hustler's lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix, but the fact is the limitations of the source stems simply can't be overcome. The boxiness of the sound is apparent from Alfred Newman's iconic 20th Century Fox fanfare on, and in fact the lossless audio only seems to highlight the narrow, tinny sound that was readily apparent on previous home video releases of The Hustler. OK, that's the bad news. The good news is, if you can get past that unappealing processed sound, Kenyon Hopkins' evocative score has never sounded better, and the 5.1 repurposing is really rather artful, with well positioned environmental effects and excellent, if not overwhelming, immersion. Dialogue is crisp and clear and the overall mix is very pleasing. The original mono mix of the film, delivered in Dolby Digital 2.0, is also available.

The Hustler Blu-ray, Special Features and Extras
Paul Newman at Fox (HD; 27:11) a really nice career retrospective concentrating on the studio where Newman made some of his most iconic films.
Jackie Gleason: The Big Man (HD; 12:04) gives similar, albeit briefer, treatment to Gleason, a man too few people dismiss as not much of an actor. The Hustler proves definitively that that simply isn't the case. My favorite quote about Gleason in this piece is the comment that he was "a bulldog with a bottle of scotch around its neck."
The Real Hustler: Walter Tevis (Audio only; 18:55) is a really interesting 1984 radio interview with Tevis, the novelist who wrote the original book on which the movie was based.

Ported over from the previously released DVD are:
Commentary with Paul Newman, Carol Rossen, Dede Allen, Stefan Gierasch, Ullu Grosbard, Richard Schickel and Jeff Young. This fascinating, well edited piece (hosted by Stuart Galbraith) gets into an amazing amount of material, courtesy of a very well selected group of insiders, including Robert Rossen's daughter Carol and editor Dede Allen. A really informative and well done commentary for an important film.
Life in the Fast Lane: Fast Eddie Felson and The Search for Greatness (SD; 11:49) features a bunch of interviews (including Newman and Piper Laurie) and is a decent overview of the film and its impact.
Milestones in Cinema History: The Hustler (SD; 28:04) is a somewhat more in-depth look at the film than Fast Lane is, with a wealth of background information and interviews.
Swimming with Sharks: The Art of the Hustle (SD; 9:38) features a bunch of pro players talking about real life hustles.
The Hustler: The Inside Story (SD; 24:32) is yet another retrospective, though this one takes the form of reminiscences by several people, including those (like Jerry Orbach) not inherently associated with the film.
Paul Newman: Hollywood's Cool Hand (SD; 43:44) is the A&E Biography episode devoted to Newman.
Trick Shot Analysis by Mike Massey (SD; 13:51) has the pro pool expert doing PIP commentary on several trick shots from the film.
How to Make the Shot with Mike Massey (SD; 3:41) has Massey recreating some of those trick shots himself.

The Hustler - 50th Anniversary Edition (1961)

Bolstered by a quartet of simply amazing performances (Newman, Laurie, Gleason, Scott), this is an acting tour de force the likes of which must have amazed 1961 audiences. The film's achievement is so shattering that the depth, nuance and power of those performances seems hardly diminished by the intervening years. Though The Hustler is undeniably seedy, it's a gritty, grimy look at desperate characters trying to carve out a piece of their own twisted version of the American Dream. It's sad, it's compelling and it is completely and utterly unforgettable. Very highly recommended.

[hide=How use .REV files]
Recovery Volumes (.rev)

Recovery volumes or .rev files are special files which can be created by WinRAR/RAR and allow you to reconstruct missing and damaged files in a volume set. They can
only be used with multi-volume archives.

This feature may be useful for backups or, for example, when you post a multivolume archive to a newsgroup and some of the subscribers did not receive some files. Reposting recovery volumes instead of usual volumes may reduce the total number of files to repost.

Each recovery volume is able to reconstruct one missing RAR volume. For example, if you have 30 volumes and 3 recovery volumes, you are able to reconstruct any 3 missing volumes. If the number of .rev files is less than a number of missing volumes, reconstructing is impossible. The total number of usual and recovery volumes must not exceed 255 and the number of recovery volumes must be less than the number of RAR volumes.

WinRAR reconstructs missing and damaged volumes either when clicking on .rev file, or when using rc command or automatically, if it cannot locate the next volume and finds the required number of .rev files when unpacking.

You may use the "Recovery volumes" option in the Archive name and parameters dialog or a similar option also appears in the Protect archive command to create recovery volumes. In the command line mode you may do it with -rv switch or rv command.

Original copies of damaged volumes are renamed to *.bad before reconstruction. For example, volname.part03.rar will be renamed to volname.part03.rar.bad.
