Nader e Simin hanno ottenuto il visto per lasciare l'Iran ma Nader si rifiuta di partire e abbandonare il padre affetto da Alzheimer. Simin intende chiedere il divorzio per partire lo stesso con la figlia Termeh e, nel frattempo, torna a vivere da sua madre. Nader deve assumere una giovane donna, Razieh, che possa prendersi cura del padre mentre lui lavora, ma non sa che la donna, molto religiosa, non solo è incinta ma sta anche lavorando senza il permesso del marito. Ben presto Nader si troverà coinvolto in una rete di bugie, manipolazioni e confronti, mentre la sua separazione va avanti e sua figlia deve scegliere da che parte stare e quale futuro avere..
