Joe, a gun-toting drifter, arrives in the Mexican town of San Miguel, where families of the outlaws Rojo and Baxter have been fighting for years for control of territory. Of course you can take advantage of this situation, Joe tries to get the favor of Benito - chief Rojo - killing four gunmen and the Baxter brothers, thus being accepted into the band.
When a coach accompanied by the Mexican army crosses San Miguel, the gunman decides to follow at a distance, beyond the edge of town, where he witnessed a bloody ambush that Rojo organized masquerading as Yankee soldiers. Looking at the bandits escape with a rich cargo of gold, Joe realizes that it is time to care for their interests, with a double play, selling the false news to the families of two soldiers survived the ambush and hidden in a mine for cause a clash that remove both the middle. The same night he unleashed a furious battle, during which the prisoner Rojo are the son of the old Baxter, in order to blackmail him.
But also have a weakness Rojo: Ramon, the most ruthless of the gang, is in love with the beautiful Marisol, who kidnaps and delivery to Joe Baxter, thereby creating the conditions for an exchange. Once done, Joe pretends to be still in the service of Rojo and take advantage of the night to free the girl from the farmhouse where he is locked up, but when he returned, is unmasked and brutally tortured. He manages to escape by hiding in a coffin, which witnessed the massacre of Baxter led by Ramon. Having recovered from the wounds of the beating, Joe will address the bandit in a duel to the death.

sta situazione, Joe cerca di ottenere la benevolenza di Benito - capo dei Rojo - e uccide quattro sicari dei fratelli Baxter, venendo così accettato nella banda.
Quando una diligenza scortata dall'esercito messicano attraversa San Miguel, il pistolero decide di seguirla a distanza, oltre i confini della cittadina, dove assiste ad una cruenta imboscata che i Rojo hanno organizzato travestendosi da soldati nordisti. Osservando i banditi fuggire con un abbondante carico d'oro, Joe intuisce che è giunto il momento di curare i propri interessi: con un doppio gioco, vende alle famiglie la falsa notizia di due soldati sopravvissuti all'agguato e nascosti in una miniera, per provocare uno scontro che le tolga entrambe di mezzo. La stessa notte si scatena una furibonda battaglia, durante la quale i Rojo fanno prigioniero il figlio del vecchio Baxter, allo scopo di ricattare quest'ultimo.
Ma anche i Rojo hanno un punto debole: Ramon, il più spietato della banda, è innamorato della bella Marisol, che Joe rapisce e consegna ai Baxter, creando in questo modo le condizioni per uno scambio. Una volta avvenuto, Joe si finge ancora al servizio dei Rojo e approfitta della notte per liberare la ragazza dal cascinale dove è rinchiusa, ma, al suo ritorno, viene smascherato e brutalmente torturato. Riesce poi a fuggire nascondendosi in una bara, da cui assiste al massacro dei Baxter provocato da Ramon. Ripresosi dalle ferite del pestaggio, Joe affronterà il bandito in un duello all'ultimo sangue.
