In the spring of 1940, Britain was losing ground to the German army fast and at an all-time low both morally and militarily. Churchill needed a solution that would not only give him the military edge but, crucially, raise the spirits of a despondent population. Commando tells the true story of Churchill’s “band of brothers”: an unorthodox mix of misfits and buccaneers who operated outside the normal rules of warfare. Drawing on the testimony of 100 veterans and using original archive, Commando offers a rare and intimate insight into the lives and actions of the secretive group that was the forerunner of the Special Forces: the Paratroopers, the Special Air Services and the Special Boat Service.

Episode 1/4.

The second programme in the series about Churchill’s army of elite irregulars tells the story of the greatest commando raid of the Second World War. The attack on St Nazaire in France – the biggest dry dock in Europe – was the ultimate in suicide raids, a dramatic high-risk piece of brazen daring. It was to be the most spectacularly successful of the Second World War commando operations. The tale of this extraordinary mission – for which five Victoria Crosses were awarded – is recalled by commandos who sailed up the Loire that night, successfully blew up the dry dock, and then attempted to fight their way home. The programme contains footage of veterans on location and original archive film of their capture.

When war broke out in North Africa in 1940, a new breed of soldier was needed – one who could operate effectively behind enemy lines in one of the most hostile environments on earth: the desert. The commando movement was to spawn a lean and lethal killing force supremely adapted to such conditions. This programme tells the story of the most successful secret army of all time: the SAS and, of their partners in war, the Long-Range Desert Group. Seventy years on, the survivors of the desert raids – including SAS legends like Johnny Cooper – recount their extraordinary experiences. Evocative reconstruction of amazing missions and archive footage never before shown on British television, lend substance and power to their extraordinary and often moving, tales.

When the Germans used parachutists to invade Belgium and Holland in May 1940, Churchill was stung into action. Britain had no similar force and Churchill called for an airborne commando unit to be set up immediately. Commando tells the story of the men who pioneered Britain’s raids from the air.
