Rock Hudson interprète un jeune Irlandais impulsif et impétueux du début du XIXème siècle, membre de l’un de ces comités révolutionnaires qui étaient omniprésents alors, et dont il regrette l’immobilisme. Recherché par les polices de l’occupant anglais, il se réfugie à Dublin, où un homme le prend sous son aile. Il ne sait pas encore qu’il s’agit du capitaine Thunderbolt (Jeff Morrow), le principal héros de la révolution en marche. A ses côtés, il gagnera en maturité, saura canaliser son énergie, et trouvera l’amour avec la fille de son mentor, interprétée par Barbara Rush, une habituée du cinéma de Sirk qui la filme très joliment…
