Ecce Homo (1968)

Among the debris of an atomic war, Jean, Anna and their son Patrick, a small family, believe that they're the only survivors of the human kind. They have choosen a caravan parked on a beach near a dead city as their house: the sea gives them a lot of food and the city all the needed furnishings. Days are passing with a strange peaceful resignation until two new survivors, Len the soldier and Quentin the highbrow, appear. Spying on the behaviour and the talks of the couple, the newcomers realize that Jean, clearly hostile to them, became impotente because of radiations and so Quentin starts to consider Anna as a real opportunity to perpetuate the human kind. What's a moral duty for a highbrow, it's a instinctive and violent desire for the soldier. Len possesses the woman and after killing Jean drives his mate out plotting his abandonment, but he also gets killed during a violent altercation. When even Anna, panic-stricken, committes suicide, only Quentin and the little Patrick finally stay on the beach. The dramatic experience of the four adults and the boy symbolizes the ultimate possible finishing line of the human kind. The soldier and the highbrow are the two faces of the same crazy progress which has led to apocalypse; the man sexually humiliated is a remain of a decadent society, spiritually weak and phisically become poor; the boy is the innocence trampled by the choices of men; the woman, the motivating factor of a violence rediscovered as an universal category.
