Film opens on December 18, 1999, just a few days before the dawn of the new century. A local reporter, Iron Idem, announces that the Martians have landed. Shortly after that his program loses its independence: he is given the script telling the crowds how to welcome the invaders. Then the chaos breaks out: the Martians and police mistreat the populace; things become violent. Idem's own wife is kidnapped and it seems somebody is trying to reduce his effectiveness as a reporter. Idem decides to fight back: he illegally broadcasts a message during the rock concert, but nobody believes him anymore.

Television personality Iron Idem is walking through a city street with his wife when he sees two boys playing – one walking on all fours while the other, masked, walks him like a dog on a leash. Idem is taken aback when the child holding the leash kicks the other – when he confronts him about it, the child simply states that he is a martian leading an inferior human. As Idem and his wife walk away, disturbed by the sight of the children playing in such a way, they pass by television equipment inexplicably set up in the street – the director’s first indications of the nature of the story he is to tell.

The War of the Worlds: Next Century / Wojna swiatów - nastepne stulecie (1981) [ReUp]

We learn, through a stock footage montage, that a Martian civilization has made contact with our own and have traveled to our planet to share with us their advanced ways.

The War of the Worlds: Next Century / Wojna swiatów - nastepne stulecie (1981) [ReUp]

On the 12th day after the Martian arrival, Idem heads to the studio of the main broadcasting network to do his show [Iron Idem's Independent News, in which he dons a blond wig and to play the part] as usual, only to find a script other than the one he had prepared forced upon him by a higher up. The new script is full of propaganda about the Martians, their good will visit, and catch phrases ["Remember - to be a good citizen is to have no trouble, and you will not be troubled if you are not trouble for others"] as well as more disturbing social developments – like the implementation of mandatory blood-typing for all citizens. After his broadcast concludes, with a segue into a music video from the atrociously nomered band The Electric Glue [singing their "Ode to Martians"], it becomes obvious that Idem is distressed about his show suddenly having been turned into a propaganda machine. A confrontation with the station manager goes nowhere, and Idem returns home to his wife.

As the two of them lie in bed together, chainsaw-wielding state police burst into the room, handcuff Idem, and wrap his still-living wife in a body bag and drag her away. The head officer sits and speaks with Idem – explaining to him that they have taken his wife so that he might be convinced to like the Martians – as the rest of the officers destroy the room around him [the sole Martian along for the trip takes a can of red spray paint and marks a hanging piece of artwork with the words 'ALL WE NEED IS LOVE']. Idem is tagged with one of the Martians’ ‘Tokens of Friendship’, a numbered tag stapled to the ear that marks those who have gone out of their way to aid in interplanetary relations. As he walks through the streets towards a Martian Welcome center to have his token registered, he spies more television equipment being set up – tall poles with monitors and speakers pointing in all directions – and an elderly man trying to smash them with bricks.

Idem returns to the television station and speaks with the manager again – agreeing to spew the propaganda if his wife can be returned. But the manager wants more – Idem, knowing his audience and having earned their trust through his good work in the past, is to write his own scripts in accordance with the manager’s needs. He returns home, no closer to seeing his wife than before, only to find that he’s been evicted from his apartment on bogus charges of disturbing the peace. He is forced to sleep nights in a flop house and, desperate for human company, seeks refuge in the arms of a prostitute [paying her for literally sleeping with him instead of for sex]. Meanwhile, the Martian impact on the world around him becomes more apparent – compulsory blood drives are put underway [to sate the visitor's thirst for human blood - "ALL WE NEED IS LOVE AND BLOOD" becomes their new motto] as innocent civilians are killed in accidents due to their disregard for human life.

Soon Idem finds his show cancelled to make way for a grandiose live broadcast event at which he is slated to appear. His wife still missing and his life and career seemingly beyond his control, Idem begins to crack – he rapes a woman [who was infatuated with his alternate television persona] in the studio elevator and murders one of the Martians in the bathroom. Upon arriving at the live event [spearheaded by a performance by The Electric Glue] he forces himself on stage to give a final address as Iron Idem – rebuking his past propaganda claims about the Martians and dramatically ripping their ‘Token of Friendship’ from his ear. It is only after he is thrown out of the proceedings and into the mobile office of his producer that he realizes the tide is turning – the Martians are set to leave the following day and his producer, seeking to capitalize on the problems they’ve caused, films faked footage of mothers morning the dead for future broadcast. With the Martians gone the media turns the public tide – Idem’s own words are used against him [as is the Martian token that was forced upon him] and he finds himself a scapegoat for the atrocities committed by the visitors.

The War of the Worlds: Next Century / Wojna swiatów - nastepne stulecie (1981) [ReUp]

Writer-director Piotr Szulkin dedicates this film to H. G. Wells as well as Orson Welles at the conclusion of the opening credits. Aside from a few details [the Martians' thirst for human blood, for instance], the biggest inspiration seems to be the 1938 Welles radio broadcast – rather, the chaos that resulted from it. WAR OF THE WORLDS – NEXT CENTURY isn’t really about a Martian invasion at all [indeed, it could be argued as to whether or not the Martians of the film, just short people in caps, puffy jackets, and big boots with their faces painted silver, are really Martians at all, or just creations of the media]. It is, instead, about the media/state – really one in the same as far as the universe of the film is concerned – using the chaotic potential of a broadcast like Orson Welles’ to their fullest advantage. The themes of totalitarianism as administered by the media and the blind trust and apathy of the common citizenry are common threads in writer – director Szulkin’s work and would figure prominently in his next effort, the superior apocalyptic outing O-BI, O-BA – KONIEC CYWILIZACJI.

The War of the Worlds: Next Century / Wojna swiatów - nastepne stulecie (1981) [ReUp]

Given Poland’s recent history – having been catastrophically occupied by Nazi Germany until just 36 years previously – and then-current state as a part of the Eastern Bloc, it’s no wonder that themes of totalitarianism, media complicity, and public acceptance of blatant propaganda are so central to the narrative of Szulkin’s science fiction efforts. Even in light of the serious issues at hand, Szulkin provides some levity through his wicked sense of humor [the scene in which Idem's wife is abducted has definite comedic overtones, for instance] and preponderance for absurd imagery.

The War of the Worlds: Next Century / Wojna swiatów - nastepne stulecie (1981) [ReUp]

From a purely technical perspective, WAR OF THE WORLDS – NEXT CENTURY is a beautifully made picture. Cinematography by Zigmunt Samosiuk is expertly handled, with gorgeous image compositions to behold throughout. The original music [composed by Jerzy Maksymiuk and Josef Skrzek] is suitably bizarre and entirely fitting, reminding, at times, of certain parts of the musical version of WAR OF THE WORLDS by Jeff Wayne. Performances are well-handled by all involved – Roman WIlhelmi’s Idem is impossible not to empathize with, even in his worst moments. There’s also a fun [if brief] turn by Jerzy Stuhr as a flamboyant attorney.

The War of the Worlds: Next Century / Wojna swiatów - nastepne stulecie (1981) [ReUp]

WAR OF THE WORLDS – NEXT CENTURY is only the third Polish film I’ve seen, having only recently taken to tracking down a few titles – I’ve not been let down yet. After this and O-BI, O-BA, I can hardly wait to see more of Szulkin’s work. Highly recommended.
