Author, educator, and philosopher Dr. Timothy Leary was wildly controversial throughout his life, so it came as no surprise he would also choose a controversial way to die. Timothy Leary's Last Trip documents Leary's life and career, from his days at West Point through his years as an LSD guru (he coined the phrase "Tune in, turn on, drop out") to his final days as he prepared for his death by broadcasting his last days over the internet.

Timothy Leary's Last Trip (1997) [Re-UP]

Last Trip gives a brief introduction to LSD, the lives of Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey with the Merry Pranksters. The documentary comes out giving a nostalgic feel of fading icons of the psychedelic revolution. Different from other documentaries on the topic like "Beyond life" and "The man who turned on America" it doesn't focus on the controversies of LSD or alone on the life of Leary. The narrator is the son of a Merry Prakster Ken Babbs, so what would you expect? What i like about it is that after having watched all of the documentaries on the "sixties" topic this one gives just that - the lives of others than Leary. For instance the tale of the Merry Prankster Furthur bus, which toured around the States. While Leary was a meditating "scientist" and Kesey was a recretional "party animal", they both had much in common and were both icons of the time. This documentary gives insight of their last reunion and doings before the death on Leary. The latter half of the documentary serves their lives after having "turned on" and "passing the acid test", as old men of a fading era saying that the "revolution isn't over" and "we'll trip on the other side". Which might be true now, since they're both dead.

Timothy Leary's Last Trip (1997) [Re-UP]

At a mere 56 minutes, the documentary Timothy Leary's Last Trip is one to watch if you're curious as to what it was all about back in the '60s. If you've lived in a cave and don't know who Dr. Timothy Leary is, I'll tell ya.

Timothy Leary's Last Trip (1997) [Re-UP]

As shown here, Leary is a guy who liked to question authority. He was even thrown out of Westpoint for that very thing. He went on to get his PhD in Psychology though, and was a professor at Harvard when the CIA began their experimentation with LSD as a mind control drug. Leary got interested and conducted experiments of his own.. on himself and on his willing students. This went on for about 6 years before Harvard pulled his plug and fired him, at which point he was offered the use of the Hitchcock mansion, Millbrook, to further his little study into LSD (Acid). Here he viewed himself and his various guests (among them Jack Kerouak) as intellectual conservatives and gurus in mind exploration. This is where he founded IFIF in '63: International Federation for Internal Freedom.

During this same time, Stanford was doing the experiments of Acid (then classified under the nae MK-Ultra) on their students for the CIA and among those students were Ken Babbs and Ken Kesey (author of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest). These two formed the Merry Band of Pranksters, bought a school bus and painted it in psychodelic colors, and began the now infamous Elektrik Koolaid Acid Test (on which the book was based). The first of these events was at the Forum and noted the debut of the Grateful Dead. They took the show on a road trip from California to NY, turning on folks all along the way, ending at Milbrook to see Leary. After a rough start, they all supposedly became fast friends.

All of this is shown with archival footage from the BBC, bits and pieces of the film The Bus Trip made by the Pranksters, and film that O.B. Babbs had from his father. O.B. narrates parts of this in a way that makes it clear that he admires all these men and this documentary was a work of love.

Timothy Leary's Last Trip (1997) [Re-UP]

There are a few parts where Babbs interjects some of his own psychodelic imagery that was obviously done on a very low budget and is very grainy, but for the most part it's all about the clips of the actual meetings, trips, and interviews with Leary over the years.
