In 1946 a young New England banker, Andy Dufresne (Robbins), is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and sentenced to life at the Shawshank State Prison - twice over. Quiet and introspective, he gradually strikes up a friendship with the prison 'fixer', Red (Freeman), and over the next two decades wins the trust of the governor and guards, but in his heart, he still yearns for freedom. Darabont's adaptation of a Stephen King novella is a throwback to the kind of serious, literate drama Hollywood used to make though the big spiritual resolution takes some swallowing - ditto the colour-blind relationships within the prison and the violent disavowal of any homosexual implications. Against this weighs the pleasure of discovering a first-time director with evident respect for the intelligence of his audience, brave enough to let character details accumulate without recourse to the fast-forward button. Darabont plays the long game and wins: this is an engrossing, superbly acted yarn, while the Shawshank itself is a truly formidable mausoleum.

Adapted from a Stephen King novella, The Shawshank Redemption takes a prison drama and twists it into a fascinating existential treatise on how to approach the business of day-to-day life in the face of a desperately Sisyphian reality. As the film's signature line suggests, "Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'." Filmed on location in an Ohio prison, the film occasionally lapses into familiar formulas and well-known stereotypes of the prison-drama genre, but overcomes them due in no small part to a pair of transcendent performances by Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. Director Frank Darabont and cinematographer Roger Deakins (a Coen brothers collaborator) recreate the drudgery and hopelessness of prison life in both the look and the details of dreary rituals of daily life. Spanning twenty years in the lives of its protagonists, Darabont's screenplay and direction allow us the luxury of getting to know these men – hardened criminals, with little hope for the future – through a series of quietly captivating scenes that slowly build atmosphere and tension without sacrificing characterization and thematic integrity. A critical success but a box office failure when it was first released, the film was nominated for seven Oscars, but won nary a one. Only when Shawshank was released on video did it steadily garner full-fledged public reverence.

An amazing movie. Easily one of the best movies made during the 90s and definitely one of the top "prison" movies of all-time. Pretty much everything about this movie works and works extremely well! The film touches upon many subjects, including the ideas of hope, redemption, love, loneliness, justice, life/death, friendship, endurance, fear, patience, inspiration and so much more.

Watching this movie always makes me feel a million times better, and if that's not the greatest reason to watch a film, I don't know what is. Give it up to both Freeman and Robbins for completely engulfing their characters with heart, soul and the spirit of humanity. I appreciated the message in this film, I absolutely loved the way it ended, I surrendered to its pace, I enjoyed all of its characters, I thought it was wonderfully photographed, I loved the score and I could seriously watch this movie 10 times a year and not bat an eyelash the whole way through.

And what kind of banner year was 1994?? PULP FICTION, FORREST GUMP, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL (one of my favorite romantic comedies of all-time) were all nominated for Best Picture. It's really too bad that most everyone got swept by that chocolate-lover, but no matter what the Academy deemed "better" that year, it goes without saying that SHAWSHANK has developed an even greater audience and following since that time, and is probably one of the most appreciated movies from the past twenty years (I usually NEVER hyperbolize any of my reviews (this is the BEST EVER…this is the WORST EVER…), but in this case, this film takes that cake and damn well, eats it too!).

Love it, watch it, get your own motivation from it and surrender to its spirit which gives anyone in the world hope to do whatever they dream to do in life. It's like I quoted back at the top of this review, you better "get busy living, or get busy dying". It don't get more black and white than that. Your choice.

A true cinematic inspiration.

Based on a short story by Stephen King, The Shawshank Redemption has certainly earned its reputation as one of the most effective prison movies in cinematic history - as the film, written and directed by Frank Darabont, contains virtually all of the tropes and devices that the genre has come to be associated with. The ensuing inclusion of such familiar elements as the Evil Warden and the Sadistic Guard are undeniably put to brilliant use by Darabont, with the end result a piece of work that - aside from a midsection that's almost egregiously episodic - manages to hold the viewer transfixed virtually from start to finish. Tim Robbins stars as Andy Dufresne, a mild-mannered banker who eventually develops a deep bond with fellow inmate Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman) during a double-lifetime sentence within the walls of Shawshank Prison.

While it's virtually impossible to overstate the effectiveness of the two lead performances, Darabont does a superb job of transforming even the most minor of supporting characters into vividly-drawn, thoroughly compelling figures - something that is, of course, due in no small part to the expectedly accomplished efforts of such familiar faces as Bob Gunton, Clancy Brown, and William Sadler. Yet as fully realized as Shawshank's landscape inevitably winds up becoming, there's little doubt that the film's most indelible element remains the touching friendship between Robbins and Freeman's respective characters. The chemistry between the two actors - coupled with career-best performances from the pair - ensures that The Shawshank Redemption ultimately packs an emotional wallop that one hardly would have expected from such an endeavor, and it's consequently not difficult to see why the movie's esteem has grown considerably in the years since its theatrical release.

It is no secret, especially to the billions and billions of people who read my movie reviews daily (ok, ok, semi-annually when I actually write them), that I am not a big fan of the Stephen King movie adaptation. The books are too complex and too brilliant to be encapsulated by the greedy and shortsighted idiots that run Hollywood movie studios. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that this is a Castle Rock production (King’s own production company) and, as a result, the adaptation is carried out with pains-taking care, producing a magnificent adaptation of the novella “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption”.

Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) first comes to Shawshank prison, a maximum-security prison, in 1948. He is a 30-something vice-president of a local bank who has a very successful career ahead of him until he is imprisoned for the cold-blooded murder of his wife and her lover. This is not made any easier for him given the fact that he is innocent of the charge. It is here that he meets “Red” (Morgan Freeman) the man who, in Shawshank, can get you just about anything, within reason. Andy’s life is anything but idyllic in Shawshank. There are sadistic guards, even more sadistic homosexual rapists, a corrupt warden, and the endless boredom and lack of hope. Yet, even through all this, Andy does not give up hope. Despite the inhuman conditions he always manages to find some joy or humanity in a desolate situation.

Now don’t forget, this is a Stephen King novel. There is no magical happy kingdom here. Andy has to do hard time. Although, once his formidable financial talents come to the attention of the warden, they get a little easier. In prison, Andy is able to run a small financial empire for the warden, keep the spirits of his fellow inmates alive, and dream of the day that he will be able to escape and buy a boat for cruise fishing on a Mexican beach. As I said, this is a Stephen King novel so anything is possible. Maybe there is a happy ending and maybe there isn’t. Either way, it’s going to be a rough ride.

Thank God that Castle Rock Entertainment exists. This allows actors like Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins to explore the nuances of the characters that they are playing and to bring them to the screen exactly as if you were reading the book and getting their very thoughts. The film stays faithful to the plot development of the novella and makes only the smallest of changes when it enhances the story telling. This is a film that talks to you about hope and the ability of the human spirit to conquer all adversity. It also has some great drama, action and, humour that should satisfy the most critical of moviegoers.

Shawshank Redemption is an entertaining masterpiece that every Stephen King fan, and every fan of excellent cinematography, should see.

The Shawshank Redemption is a great film, one among few great films of the 1990s. Frank Darabont's direction is so precise, smooth, and fluid that every scene is important and every line of dialogue furthers the understanding of the characters and events.
I haven't read Stephen King's short story on which the film is based, but Darabont's script is excellent. He gives us two different characters, Andy and Red, who form a relationship that probably couldn't exist outside the Shawshank walls, but really Andy and Red are the same person with the same aspirations, such as freedom and harmony.
Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman elevate their material to a high level, making their characters transcend the fictional notion and creating realistic people. The supporting cast is excellent, too, especially Bob Gunton and Clancy Brown who make their malevolent characters believable, and William Sadler and James Whitmore are great also.
Furthermore, The Shawshank Redemption is beautifully photographed by Roger Deakins, movingly scored by composer Thomas Newman, splendidly edited by Richard Francis-Bruce, and superbly designed by Terence Marsh. The Shawshank Redemption is a film for the ages, and it rightfully earns it's status as a classic among fans and professionals.
