Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife Etheline (Anjelica Huston) had three children—Chas, Margot, and Richie—and then they separated. Chas (Ben Stiller) started buying real estate in his early teens and seemed to have an almost preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) was a playwright and received a Braverman Grant of $50,000 in the ninth grade. Richie (Luke Wilson) was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure, and disaster. I can loosely classify The Royal Tenenbaums as an off-beat black comedy, but it pretty much defies description. It won't connect with everybody, but for those it does, it's a real treat. It achieves a comic flavor I haven't really seen before, which is always refreshing. If there is a flaw, it is that the emotional detachment of the characters – essential to its brand of humor – keep the audience detached as well. I liked watching the characters, but I'm not sure I cared about them. It's a rough break, because the same thing that kept me out of the dramatic side sold me on the comic side. I'm not complaining; The Royal Tenenbaums is refreshingly original, clever, meticulously detailed, and highly entertaining.

Forget Max Fischer – this is Wes Anderson’s opus. A sprawling tragicomedy about the resentment and possible reconciliation that drive the Tenenbaum family, this features Anderson and co-writer Owen Wilson at their most ambitious. The story just keeps spilling out of them. It's as if they are pre-schoolers who have more to say when coloring time is over, and so they keep on scribbling while all the other kids settle down for a nap. Rueful laughs dominate, so that a scene can unexpectedly go from eliciting guffaws to tears. Anderson makes the funniest films you've ever seen and the saddest, something like those droll William Wegman photographs of Weimaraner dogs dressed up in suits. Every performance perfectly captures this elusive tone, whether it’s Anjelica Huston as the matriarch or supporting players Owen Wilson, Bill Murray and Danny Glover. I still prefer Anderson’s Rushmore - it feels more spontaneous – but this more than anything else showcases what he does best.

Royal’s ship sailed long ago, but reflecting on his regrets may reverse the course for his kids. It’s a thin olive branch, but an olive branch nevertheless, beautifully reflected in Anderson’s most poetic final shot — an epitaph that, as both a load of bull and a figurative truth, befits the son of a bitch buried beneath it.

Wittier, a lot more enjoyable and infinitely richer than the year's major Oscar contenders, this is clearly a blood brother to Anderson's Rushmore. The Tenenbaums are New York high society gone to seed. Scandalous Royal (Hackman) separated from wife Etheline (Huston) two decades ago, and after that kept his distance as his once prodigious offspring slumped. Business whizz Chas (Stiller) has become a paranoid neurotic; Richie (Wilson) is a tennis star whose career was sacrificed to love; adopted daughter Margot (Paltrow) is a closed book of a playwright. Financially embarrassed and claiming a dying man's last rights, Royal returns to put his house in order. The milieu is reminiscent of Preston Sturges' screwball fancies from the early 1940s - albeit scored to '70s rock. Anderson's unusually pronounced literary influences include Salinger, Edith Wharton and the New Yorker magazine, and the film sometimes resembles a cartoon from that august publication's glory days: an elegantly composed caricature given the finishing touch with an immaculately turned one-liner. It exists in a bubble - Anderson's New York doesn't exist and never did - but the rarefied atmosphere is a bit of a blind; what sneaks up on you is how, in his deliciously roundabout way, Anderson wears irony on his sleeve to camouflage a deeper sincerity. At its heart, this is a comedy of unrequited love, melancholy and disappointment. One to savour.
