The New Detectives centers around murders that are committed in North America and the forensics used to convict the murderers of their crime. The New Detectives show re-enactments and dramatizations of events surrounding a murder. Real file footage is shown on occasion. Unlike The FBI Files, The New Detectives sister show, also produced by Tom Golden and New Dominion Pictures, The New Detectives mostly centers around murders that police departments solve without assistance from the FBI, but there have been episodes where the FBI was called in to assist with particularly serious crimes.

Forensic scientists work with a variety of methods (i.e. computer technology, anthropology, entomology) to solve crimes which would otherwise remain unsolved, through finding seemingly obscure clues such as tire tracks, bullet fragments and hair samples and then putting the pieces together. Interviews with forensic pathologists, cold case detectives and victims families show the process entailed in each case.
