Scott Carey and his wife Louise are sunning themselves on their cabin cruiser, the small craft adrift on a calm sea. While his wife is below deck, a low mist passes over him. Scott, lying in the sun, is sprinkled with glittery particles that quickly evaporate. Later he is accidentally sprayed with an insecticide while driving and, in the next few days, he finds that he has begun to shrink. First just a few inches, so that his clothes no longer fit, then a little more. Soon he is only three feet tall, and a national curiosity. At six inches tall he can only live in a doll's house and even that becomes impossible when his cat breaks in. Scott flees to the cellar, his wife thinks he has been eaten by the cat and the door to the cellar is closed, trapping him in the littered room where, menaced by a giant spider, he struggles to survive.

Auf der Flucht vor der Katze im Keller beginnt für ihn ein grotesker Kampf ums Überleben. Ein Klassiker des fantastischen Filmes und eine wunderbare Fabel über die Bedeutung des Menschen in unserem Kosmos. Mit viel Fantasie, besonderem Aufwand an originellen Tricks und beeindruckenden Spezialeffekten verfilmte Jack Arnold die unglaubliche und unvergessliche Geschichte des Mr. C nach dem Roman von Richard Matheson.

Suite à un passage en pleine mer dans une nappe de brouillard radioactif, Scott Carey voit avec effarement son corps diminué de taille ! Il consulte les plus grandes sommités scientifiques qui ne peuvent que constater le phénomène… De plus, Scott retrécit toujours et nul ne peut prévoir jusqu'où le processus ira. Sa femme lui installe une petite maison de poupée, il ne mesure plus que 10 centimètres… Un jour, seul à la maison, Scott est attaqué par le chat de la maison…

Scott Carey non dà molto peso ad una improvvisa nebbia che per qualche momento lo investe durante una gita in motoscafo. Ma alcuni mesi più tardi scopre che gli abiti gli stanno diventando un po' larghi e che la statura è leggermente diminuita. E con il passare dei giorni, lo strano fenomeno diventa sempre più avvertibile. Apparentemente la sua salute è buona, gli stessi medici non riescono a trovare una spiegazione scientifica al "rimpicciolimento". Scott finisce col perdersi in una casa che per lui è diventata un mondo gigantesco ricolmo di trappole, insidie e pericoli mortali. Mentre la moglie lo crede morto, l'uomo, finito dentro la cantina di casa, si industria per sopravvivere combattendo contro un ragno: e in questa lotta per la vita, sente di crescere moralmente e di poter rivendicare di fronte all'universo intero la sua dignità di uomo.
Da uno dei capolavori di Matheson, uno dei più bei film (se non il migliore) del regista da sempre considerato un maestro dai cultori del genere.

Scott Carey (Grant Williams) se encuentra con una misteriosa niebla radioactiva cuando navega con su mujer en el barco de un amigo.
